Carr preparing reading book Julian W. Carr, youngest son Of B; S. Carr of Hillsboro, is at present on leave of absence from Kis duties at. New York Univer sity’s Reading Institute. During the current semester and throughout the summer, he will be in Albany while prepar ing a publication on reading in struclion in the secondary school. This project is being sponsored by ;he New York State Depart mevit of Education. In November Carr was invited to represent New York Univer sity at an initial planning confer ence composed of state education department personnel, professors from teachers colleges and uni versities throughout the state, and reading specialists from the field. Later he was chosen to go to Albany and write the publica tion while serving in the tempor ary capacity of Associate in Sec ondary Curriculum Development. JULIAN CARR Carr, who is also a doctoral candidate at NYU, plans to re turn to the university in the fall. I: Hillsboro sports fete tonight The first Annual Sports Awards, Banquet for Hillsboro High School athletes will be held tonight at 7 o’clock in the Cameron Park $chool. Following the barbecue dinner presentation of awards will be i given. The Rev. Steve Kim brough, pastor of the Hillsboro Methodist Church, will be mas ter of ceremonies. '* Outstanding sports persons who Will present awards will be: Joe Marks, assistant football coach at Carolina; Kenneth Rosemiond, alumni, of Hillsboro High School now assistant basketball coach of 'Carolina;' Doug Kistler of Duke Tin; versify and Wayne Young of thi University of North Carolina. , ( her awards will be given by John Midgett a former coach aiui on standing Booster, Joe Hughes; President of the Hills boro Exchange Club and Marion Allison, a civic leader. This event is being sponsored by the Hills boro Exchange Chib. , Exchange Club Park will open tomorrow Hillsboro's Exchange Club Park will open for the 1981 season at 6:30 p.m. Friday. In addition to the golf course, shuffle board and horseshoe games will be available, as well j as the play ground and picnic facilities.,1 1 A new parking lot has been j added to relieve the traffic con-j gestion of past seasons. Hillsboro and Aycock High School seniors are especially in-, vited to the opening for a free game of miniature golf. PROMOTED Leonard B. Tucker of Washing ton, D. C., son of Wr. and Mrs. Herbert Tucker of West Hillsboro; has been promoted to assistant treasurer of the Interstate Build ing Association of Washington, D. C. Tucker is manager of the South Captol Street office of In terstate and will continue in that position. He has been associated with the association for more than six years. CHAIRMAN Joy Carr, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Paul Carr of Hillsboro, has recently been elected Social chairman of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority at the University of North Carolina. PATIENT j Mrs. Wayland Sharpe is re j ported to be doing nicely at W^tts Hosptial where she under went surgery Monday. A SON Mr. and Mrs. Bobby S. Hastings of Decatur. Ga. annourre the ; birth of a son, Peter Stee’e. March 28 at Georgia Baptist Hospital. Baby Peter weighed six pounds at birth. He was a ve~y sick ba , by for over two weeks, staying in the hospital for 22 days. He is home now and reported to be do ing just fine. The Hastings have another son, Phil, 2^ years old. HOME ' Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie S. Has tings have returned home from Decatur, Ga. after a three weeks stay with Mr. and Mrs. Bobby S. Hastings and family. Their grandson, Phil Hastings, return ed with them and is here for a few weeks stay. STROKE Clair McDade of Cedar Grove is a patient in Watts Hospital following a stroke Sunday. It is requested he have no visitors at this time. TROOP 106 Girl Scout Troop 106 of Hills boro met Tuesday afternoon with Sarah Bell serving refresh ments. The group rehearsed the play which they are planning to give later this spring.
