Planners re-elect Ross Scroggs; set Airport Kd. meeting Dec. 5 Ross Scroggs Jr., Associate Di rector of Radio and Television for the University, has been re elected chairman of the 10-mem ber District Planning Board in Chapel Hill for the coming year At its meeting night before last the group elected Roy Mar* tin Vice-Chairman, - succeeding Fred Cleaveland. The Chairman ~ appointed David Slater, the Board’s planning assistant, as , Board Secretary. Regional planner Laden Faust read a detailed statement describ ing the existing zoning along Air port Road going north' from Chapel Hill. The Board agreed to hold an open meeting on Dec. 5 to discuss- among its own mem bers and property owners in the area possible changes and addi tions to zoning in this area. Gray, subject to certain stipulations on rights-of-way and water supply. ~B= Fire Dept, moves into its new building; open house is planned The Town of Chapel Hill’s new modern-design. $80,000 central fire station — first unit in a new municipal center — has been for mally accepted from the building contractor. Following a full inspection of the facilities on Tuesday after noon, the Town Board passed a motion to accept the building and turned it over to Fire Chief James S. Stewart. The Depart ment is to complete tomorrow its gradual moving from its quarters of the past 25 years in the Chap el Hill Town Hall. The new two-story structure in the triangle of Airport Rd. and North Columbia St. is 54 by 60 feet in over-all dimensions and has garage space for the Town’s 100-foot extension ladder tru?k and three pumper trucks. On the I second floor are dormitory quar ters for up to 20 firemen, a class room, inspector’s and chief’s of fice, and kitchen. The building was constructed with funds approved in a bond referendum last year. On the same five-acre tract purchased by the Town last year a public library and municipal office building are to be constructed in the future. Chief Stewart said the Depart ment planned to hold an open house for the public in the new building in the very near future. * A $40,000 remodeling job on the Fire. * Department’s quarters in the Town Hall is scheduled to start immediately. This area will ( be converted for the use of the \ police department and town ad ministrative offices. Police get vote of confidence; criticism cited in Hillsborough All iuc iatc a i aoii ui criticism of the Hillsborough Po lice Department, the Town Board Tuesday night gave the Depart ment a vote of confidence and re affirmed the appointment of George Hunt as Chief._7_ A letter to Board members from a “taxpayer,” not further identified, triggered the discus sion and action.
