Frost Torrence & Company DRUGGISTS Call, Phone or Write Phones Nos. 16 and 5 L. D. TJib nazette sincerely hopes that the Gastonia Library Association and the Y. M. C. A. will, at the meeting called for Thursday night, be able to tilt upon some such plan as that out lined on the first page of today's is aae that will work out so as to give Oaatonia a good free library. Such an institution in our town would no doubt prove a great blessing as it nas done elsewhere. Every member of the Y. M. C. A. ought to be pres ent at this meeting as this matter is one of no little importance. Senator Ben R. Tillman, of South Carolina, has been critically ill for the jmst several days. He was stricken with Tralysls last Friday as he was leaving the capital build ing in Washington. The latest bul letin, issued by his physicians last night, states that his conamon is somewhat improved and tnat ne is now able to speak. Senator Tillman is about 70 years old. Another bold attempt at purse- snatching was committed in tnar lotte Saturday night. The victim was Mrs. James Wilson, who was knocked down by a negro on Cleve land avenue. Mrs. Wilsons crys lor help brought Mr. Flynn Henderson from his home, in front of which the attack occurred, and tire latter tired at the negro as he fled, but the bul lets failed to reach the fleeing negro, who was already pretty far away. and he was not captured. In his flight he dropped the purse, which contained several dollars. Mrs Wilson was not seriously injured. One of the most sensational elope ments in the history or tne btate came to light last Friday when it be came known that Mrs. Nowell, wife of Mr. Arthur H. Nowell, a well- known telegraph operator of Greens boro, had fled with Mr. Wr. E. Mas- senburg, a well-known traveling man residing at Henderson. The hus band of the fleeing woman, accom panied by a deputy sheriff, traced them to Charlotte and on to Hamlet. They were arrested at Gibson Fri day night and taken to Raleigh where she was committed to an In sane asylum. Massenburg was glv en a preliminary hearing and releas ed on a $3,000 bond. President Taft, says a dispatch from Washington, has cut down the nam be r or administration measures that he will demand at the hands of the present session of Congress to four. These measures include bills to amend tne inter-state commerce laws, to provide for the regulation of the Issuance of injunctions, to start Arizona and New Mexico on the road to statehood and validate the withdrawals of public lands for con servation purposes. It Is further stated that the announcement of this curtailed program of legislation has brought great relief to the Republi cans, who have, up to the present, been so staggered by the list of things the President wanted done that they didn't know where to be in. To rightly dispose of these four matters will hardly be consider ed child'B play. The next number of the lyceum course Is the De Koven Male Quar tette, which is to be at the Opera House Wednesday night, March 2d. Rev. W. L. Sherrill, assistant editor of the North Carolina Chris tian Advocate, published at Greens boro, spent Sunday in Gastonia and preached two excellent sermons, one at Main Street church In the morning and one at West End church at night. Brother Sherrill is deserved ly popular with the Methodist peo ple of Gastonia, and his visits are greatly enjoyed. We are asked to announce to our readers that the "Seed Corn Day" exercises, of which a full ac count was given in The Gazette last week, will be held on Friday. Gastonia Boy Carries Off the Honors in the First Field Day Event at A and M. G. R. Rotter of Char lotte Conies Out Second Beat. Charlotte Observer. Raleigh, Feb. 19. Probably nev er before in the history of athletics at the A. and M. College have track and field events been in such prom inence. The faculty recognizing the interest being shown, has given its approval and by excusing twenty-five track men from drill, the team has been placed on a substantial basis equal to that of the football and baseball teams. Today the first field day event of the season, in the shape of a cross country run, took place. This run was scheduled to come off just be fore the Christmas holidays, but ow ing to bad weather and final exam inations it had to be postponed. The course consisted of the macadam Hillsboro road from the college to Method and return a distance of three and a half miles. The winner was R. K. Babington of Gastonia of the senior class, the time being 18 minutes, 11 seconds. G. R. Rotter of Charlotte won second. Third, fourth and fifth places were won by J. I. Eason, R. Bowditch and S Bruner. respectively. Some fifteen men entered the race. Quite a num ber of the long-distance men were either away with the basketball team or were detained in the hos pital with mumps. Several mer chants of Raleigh offered prizes for the contest. A complete schedule of track meets has not been arranged yet Guilford College meets A. and M. in Raleigh on Easter Monday, also a meet with Wake Forest has been definitely arranged. Meets between A. and M. and Davidson are still pending. The interclass field day will probably be set for March 14. ANNOUNCEMENTS. FOR STATE SENATOR. Yester day the managers of the Tar Heel and Business Men's Clubs were pre sented by the solicitor to the grand Jury on the charge of dealing illicit ly . in liquors. According to the Charlotte papers there is a strong probability that all the other Char lotte Clubs which maintain lockers will be brought Into court at this term by the solicitor. The strongest evidence against these clubs it seems is the fact that they hold federal II- . cense to deal in whiskey and beer. The outcome of these; cases will be . awaited with interest all over the State. Photos, regular price $4.50, going at $3.50 per dozen at Green's.
