Ader, city editor and circulation manager respectively of The Char lotte Chronicle, were here Friday on business. The February term of Gaston Superior Court begins next Monday. Padgett and little daughter returned Sunday from Charlotte where they spent a week with her parents, Mr. and Airs. F. A. Hicks. Mr. Padgett went over Sat urday and accompanied them home, Mr. M. T. Parham, of the firm of M. T. Parham' & Co., was able to be up town Saturday for the first time in over a month, having been confined to his home on Third av enue by a severe attack of grip. Miss Clara Crawford, who has charge of the millinery department of Stowe Brothers' store, Belmont, went last week to the Northern mar kets to purchase the spring and summer headgear for this firm. Mr. Eli Kendrick left yesterday morning for North Wilkesboro where he has accepted a temporary posi tion as bookkeeper with the Deposit & Savings Bank. He will probably be gone two months or more. Mrs. J. B. Wylle and little daughter arrived in Gastonia Satur day from Fort Valley, Ga., where they spent ten days with realtives, to visit her parents, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. It is In teresting matter and our readers will find it well worm the little time that it will require in the reading. Mrs. Mattie Hunter, mother of Mr. J. A. Hunter, of Gastonia, is confined to her bed at her home in Belmont as the result of injuries sustained about two weeks ago in a fall. Her many friends will be glad to know that she is resting well and that her condition is improving. Hr.' Giles L. W7ilson, of Spar tanburg, S. C, spent Sunday and yesterday here, having been summon ed to Gastonia on account of the ill ness of his mother, Mrs. Mary D. Wilson, who is quite ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. K. Dixon, on York street. Mr. Wilson Is state bank examiner for South Carolina. We are requested to call the at tention of al members of the Young Men' Christian Association to the business meeting which is to be held in the library on Thursday evening of this week at 7:30 o'clock. It Is very Important to have a full attend ance of the members of the associa tion, as several matters of very great" Morris Go. Opticians Importance must be settled at this meeting. Capt. N. G. Todd has moved his family from Mount Holly to Gastonia and is occupying one of the Wilson cottages on Willow street. Mr. Todd is in charge of the county's free-la bor road-grading gang and has just completed the work of grading the Rhyne Mount Holly road. He has commenced the work of grading the road which connects the Gastonia Lowell macadam road with Spencer Mountain. This road Is about two and a half miles in length. We are carrying in this issue two formal announcements of can didates for Sheriff in addition to those which appeared in last issue Mr. J. Madison Kendrick, at present Deputy Sheriff, and Mr. J. D. B. Mc Lean, of Gastonia, announce them selves as candidates for the Sheriff's office. Both of these gentlemen are well-known throughout the county, Mr. Kendrick having been Deputy Sheriff for several years and Mr. Mc Lean being a native of the South Point section. Mr. McLean has made his home in Gastonia, however, for the past ten years or more. The following item is from to day's Charlotte Observer: "At noon yesterday and at public outcry the valuable farm belonging to the es tate of the late Rev. J. S. A. Hunter, lying on the south side of the Provi dence road about 5 miles from the city, was purchased by Mr. J. C. Reid whose farm lies on the oppo site side of the highway. The farm comprises about 90 acres of valuable land in good cultivation. The high est bidder was Mr. Reid at $50.51." Rev. Mr. Hunter, it will be recalled died bere some months ago after having served a number of years as a missionary of the A. R. P. church in Mexico. Sometime ago it was announced that Rev. J. J. Beach would, after the first of March, devote all his time to East Baptist church at Gas tonia, the Bessemer City congrega tion baying extended a call to E. L Weston. The latter declined the call and the Bessemer congregation, feeling unable because of the unset- tied conditions there to call a pastor for full time, appointed a committee to ask the East Baptist church to agree for Mr. Beach to continue to give them two Sundays each month for the next few months, or through the spring and summer. A dastardly crime was committed at Burlington Sunday morning early when Will and Robert Lee Burch, brothers, attempted to rob their un cle, Charles Bradshaw. They at- tacked him with knives but were frightened away before they could accomplish their purpose. The boys te at Spray and were visiting Brad shaw. They knew he had a hun dred dollars In his pockets. They both escaped. ' A special from Washington to this morning's Charlotte Observer says that, after a hard fight and a heated discussion before the committee on commerce yesterday Senator Sim mons secured the adoption of en amendment to the House river and harbor bill providing for $615,000 for the eight-foot project from Wil mington to Fayettevllle. One hun dred thousand dollars of this sum is made Immediately Available and the Secretary of War Is authorized to make a contract or contracts for the amount needed to secure the desired deptb.
