In this year 1910, when Providence has dealt so beneficially with the people In the matter of harvests, when our factories and mills are turning out more comforts and luxuries for -our people than ever before, America which should be the most contented of nations, is the most discontented "I feel confident that It Is the ex lsting tariff, causing high prices for everything that enters into the main tenance of life that has wrought the present discontent of the people Whether they are right or not, they attribute the high prices to the tar iff make no mistake about that." For years it has been the custom of Dr. Hillis to travel from ocean to ocean on winter lecture tours, and he is now on his way home from one of them, and is therefore well qualified to express the present con dition of public sentiment. The Gazette's next serial story will be "Cherb Devlne," which is roving to be one of the most pop lar of the late novels. The story s located in Wall Street and Long Island, homes of realism rather than romance, one would say, yet the things that happen In the tale are most remarkable and romantic, without seeming at all unnatural or improbable. As for Cherub, he's no hero of the traditional variety. He's a capital fellow but he doesn't claim to be a hero at all and he keeps you laugh ing even when he's telling a girl how much he loves her, for his way of wooing is certainly unique. It's an unusual story, not only in its humor and the kind of charac ters it makes one acquainted with, but in its situations, for without seeming to be a novel of mystery It keeps you guessing and fools you at several turns In the plot. The latter is Ingenious and full of surprises, still you can say to yourself that It is Just what might happen even In the prosaic State of New York. Yes, even the episode of shutting a count up In an Ice house tha might happen with such' a resource ful fellow as Cherub on the .Job, in deed this was a trifling performance In comparison with his smashing the RJmmer crowd and electing himself president of the P., Z. and Uv But we mustn't' tell all the storyU-read ; It. 1 1" .... ' ' "I''- W-' A Cautious Judge. TH-Bits. Some years ago there was a trial for murder in Ireland in which the evidence was so palpably insufficient that the Judge stopped the case and directed the jury to return a ver dict of "Not guilty." A well-known lawyer, however, who wished to do something for the fee he had re ceived for the defense, claimed the privilege of addressing the court. "We'll hear you with pleasure, Mr. B ," Bald the Judge; "but, to pre vent accident, we'll first acquit the prisoner." Not an Early Bird. Success Magazine. A young college man, city bred and raised, answered the call for harvest hands in Kansas. Reaching a farmhouse late at night, he was promised work and assigned to a room. It seemed to him that he had hardly fallen asleep when he was asked to get up. Disgustedly the young man dressed himself In the darkness, and, picking up his grip, walked downstairs. "Say, there, young feller," said the farmer, trying ' to be helpful, "you don't need, to take your valise out to the field with you", "I know It, replied ' ' the young man tartly.
