' A young man named Hendricks died early this morning at the Loray boarding house following an illness lasting only since Saturday. His father and mother, who live at the Chadwick Mill, Charlotte, are here. Burial will be in the Loray ceme tery. Mr. Hendricks was about 18 years of age and was a member of the Loray Baptist church. Before Magistrate T. H. White yesterday afternoon at the city hall Mr. James Warren, of the Booger town section, was tried on a charge of slander and was held for trial at the next term of Gaston Superior Court, his bond, being fixed at $200 The alleged slander was uttered against Mrs. Jack Price of the Boog ertown community. The court room was packed by spectators. Sunday was "Mothers' Day," a day which is annually coming to be observed with uniformity in all ser tions of the country. One of the ways in which it is kept, we are in formed, is in the writing, by every traveling man or person away from home, of a letter to his mother on that day. Its keeping tends to draw the one away from home back in mind to home and home influences and friends, which process can not fail to bring both pleasure and prof it to a great army of people. His Loss His Eldest Son, George the Fifth, Suo ' feeds to the Throne. King Edward VII of England died Friday night at 11:45 o'clock v in Buckingham palace, London, follow ing a serious illness of only one week. Only ten days previous he had returned to England from a trip for his health. It Is stated that the king's friends were convinced that worry -over the critical political sit uation which confronted him, with sleepless nights, aggravated if it did not cause 'his fatal Illness. King Edwards eldest son, George V, Prince of Wales, succeeded to the throne and took the oath of office Saturday. The coronatioa ceremony was attended by the usual pomp and splendor."' Business and amusements of all kinds were suspended and the entire nation mourned. The dead king was born' af Buck ingham palace, London, November 9, 1841. He was christened Albert Edward in St. George's chapel, Windsor on January 25, 1842, King Frederick William of Prussia stand Ing sponsor. He was educated in England and on the continent bytu tors from 1849 to 1858. On Novem ber 9, 1859, he took military rank as colonel, unattached, with prom' lse of the Garter. On July 25, 1860, he landed in Canada for a visit, as representative of Queen Victoria. He arrived in the United States at Detroit, Mich., September 20, 1860. Accompanied by President Buchan an and members of his cabinet he planted a chestnut tree at the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon. After three days of festlv- Itles in New York city he sailed for -England October 15, 1861. In that year he entered Cambridge Univer sity as a student. In September, 1861, he met his future queen, then Princess Alexandra, of Denmark He took his seat in the House of Lords for the first time in ,1863. He married Princess .Alexandra at St, George's Chapel, Windsor, March 10, 1863. In 1874 he was elected grandmaster of the Freemasons of England. He ascended the throne on the death of Queen Victoria Jan 22, 1901, and died May 6, 1910.
