... i ' t".:.,f-- TUESDAY, SWT 81, 110. . : TIIS GASTONIA GAZETTO i ; A STRONG 6ERM0N.' ,Itev. G. D. Herman Preaches Frooi . Text "What Think Ys of ChritM at Union Service A Clear, Logl cJ Discourse. ' t Rev. Q. D. Herman. pastor: of Main, Street Methodist church. preached a sermon at the union ser vice, held Sunday night at the A. R. P. church, which nresented In a striking, original and logical dts- course the Tltal question. "What Think Ye of Christ.' He was heard 'attentively 'by ,the congregation, which showed appreciation of hla clear and concise presentation of a great subject We give below the full text of hla sermon: Matt. 22:42 -Our Lord Jesus Christ claimed to be the only begot ten Son of the Eternal Father. Pe ter and John and Paul, with the oth er apostles and disciples, believed Him to be the Incarnate Son of the Eternal Father, the Christ of prom ise and prophecy, the Redeemer and Saviour of our race. We dare hot ignore the fact that those who knew Jesus best believed in Him moat. 1. John the Baptist believed Him to be "the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world." The opinion of John ought to count. When he baptized Jesus, he heard that voice from above: "This is my wfll-beloved Son in whom I am well I. leased." It was not In keeping with either the interests or the character of this honest John to pro pagate a lie. 2. No man. ever saw more of Je sus or understood Him better than St. John the beloved disciple. He says, that in the Person of Jesus Christ the eternal Word became man, and "dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory the glory of the only begotten of the Father." That Jesus Christ, the eternal Word, wad with God in the beginning, that all things were made by Him, and He is the Fountain of all life and light, of truth and love. 3. It Is admitted on all bands that Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles, was one of the" most capable men our race has produced. In depth and sweep and clearness of Intellect, in strength and breadth and wealth of affections, and in' unconquerable will and potency of personality this Paul was the mightiest among the mighty of all the ages. About sev en years after the Crucifixion, Paul whose training and prejudices, and whose worldy interests and personal associations were all against Christ had a vision of Jesus on the Damas cus Road a vision which changed him - suddenly, radically, and etern ally; and ever after this vision Paul went up and down in the world pro claiming with supernatural energy, enthusiasm, and conviction that Je sus was none other than "God man ifested in the flesh to save men from sin. He Bays, this Jesus was declared to be the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead. 4. The writer of the Book of He- ' brews, whoever he taay have been, was a man of rare gifts, of full and accurate knowledge of the Old Tes tament, and of luminous insight In spiritual things. .This writer says. that In Jesus Christ God was speak lng to our -race through His Son, by whom he made the worlds; and that this Son, heing the brightness of the Father's glory and the express Image of His Person, upholds all things by the word 6f His power. That this Son by the sacrifice of Himself purged our sins,, and is now at the! right hand of God the Father, mak lng Intercessions for us, and that He Is able, and willing- to save .the uttermost all that come to God through him. . 1. But at this time I am not so much concerned to, know what Pe ter ' and John and ' Paul, , .with r the other apostles 'and , disciples, , thought of our. Lord Jesus Christ as I. am to know what you. think ,of .Him In view, of ..ajl the facta, what'ought ,we to; think bf.Wm? ; la it! possible jfor : is to be as fully assured 'of, His Dl ' .vine nature sis', y ere the . early disci ples, ".who 'walked and, talked, with Him In the daya of His flesh ; Is the evidence so clear, and, abundant that we 'may" cast . upon Hlnv our .sins ,'tnd sorrows, and wprk and wait, Jntbe calm assurance." of .life eteranl '.be yond the grave?. 2. It is a fact of startling slgnlfl . caned that no good .man. can, think evil, of Jesus Christ, and. atiU retain "hla. moral puriir and. '.spiritual .vigor. V:-;.- :..x..' ' iVln regard to Jesus Christ the world is divided into three distinct classes; Those who refuse to think of Him at all; those who think er roneously about Him and those who think . . correctly about . Him. .", . The man ' who refuses to consider the claims of Jesus is nothing short of a moral ' monster he chooses , "dark ness rather than light because hli deeds are evil.' The meanest man on earth Is he who politely declines to consider the claims of Jesus, for, If Christ !a the Son of God, the man who refuses to love and serve and worship Him is as ungrateful as the devil. Such as think erroneous ly of Him because of Ignorance and pejudlce deserve the sympathy and help of those who have the light of the knowledge of the glory of God In the face of Jesus Christ. Every man who would know the truth, and attain the highest life, and the best experience will examine the claims of Jesus with that moral anxiety that these claims demand and he will never reject these claims until something better is of fered. If Christ is not the best that Heaven has offered a world in sin and sorrow, then there Is no guilt in rejecting the claims of Jesus. 4. Every man who does any real thinking about Christ is compelled to think one of three things: Christ was insane; Christ was an impostor, or Christ was the Son of God. All of our thinking about Christ will come to one of these propositions in the end. If Christ was insane, 1 want to know it. If Christ was an imposter, I must know it; and if He was in very truth the Son of God, cannot afford to be ignorant of, oi indifferent to, the momentous fact 1. CHRIST NOT INSANE. We may know that Christ was not insane by what He said. A man' words will soon reveal the measure of his sanity or his insanity. The sermons and parables and conversa tions of Christ reveal the highest manifestations of sanity. Jesus Christ was the greatest logician the world ever saw. Socrates, Plato Aquinas, Butler, Hamilton, 'Watson and Fairbairn are' but dwarfs when compared to Jesus Christ in bal ance and vigor and vision of Intel led. The greatest of mere human intellects sometimes become lllogl cal an irrelevant. But Christ never uttered an irrelevant word or an 11 logical sentence. He constantly gave expression to the highest moral and spiritual truths without, effort, Truth was natural to Him. Hi? mind, dwelt In the sunlight of truth Hence, He was never confused, nev er .contradicted Himself, was never entrapt In His words by his keen enemies, was never surprised, never agitated, and never excited. He knew all the truth. The highest and most inspiring-truths came from Je bus. Now, it 1b Impossible for i man of common sense to believe for a moment that the most luminous and Inspiring truths the world knows were the product of Insanity Only a fool of the first magnitude can think and speak of Jesus as in sane. II CHRIST NOT AN IMPOSTER. That the Christ of the Gospeir was not an imposter we may know from the fact that there were none of the marks of an Imposter. about him. The ear-marks of every Im poster since .the world began, have been one or more of the following: An inordinate desire for human ap plause; an excessive greed and love of money; an over-bearing and in tolerant pride and conceit, and a selfish love of worldly ease and com fort. Every imposter, whether in politics, business or, religion, ha had one or more or all. these marks. But Jesus Christ had none of them. He cared not for the praise of the world. - He actually ran away from popularity. He steadfastly, .refused all .worldly honor.. He was unmoved by popular opinion. He spoke the truth at the risk of losing his best friends. He Bought only the honor that omes from, God. a He, cared not for money.- He was poorest among the, poor. . He . never , used Hla tre mendous bowers for' Himself. He sought nothing for Himself. , He was- poor ''from choice. -: -. ).t tHIs .-humility was. amazing to men and- Angela- and devils, ; He actually washed, the, disciples' feet Twhile. they were, disputing who among, them should be the greatest He became a verrant of 'servants. While dying he thought not of Himself,' but prayed for those who in their blind and bitter hate i.had nailed .Him to the cruel Cross, and then mocked Him. Never since the world began baa an imposter willingly died for others. Only a very bad ' man .will; call Christ, an Imposter. '' :;V. .:.'.'' III. CHRIST THE SON OF GOD. If Christ was not Insane, and If He was not an imposter; - then He was what He claimd to be the eternal Son of God the Father Al mighty, come to our world to re' deem and save men from theif sins. Now, that the Christ of the Gospels was In very truth the only begotten Son of God may be known beyond reasonable doubt' There are four ev erpresent witnesses that men of com mon sense have always regarded as infallible, because they have never deceived any man. I shall now in troduce these witnesses, and let you hear for yourself. These witnesses are notable characters. They are Prophecy, . Providence, History and Experience. You must admit no court ever had more nonorable wit nesses. I. PROPHECY So far as It relates to the, value of this argument, It matters not wheth er you regard prophecy as the pro duct of the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit, or aa the highest aspirations and iedals of the good men of old, or simply as the embodiment of the faith and traditions of the Jewish nation: One fact remains beyond dispute that In Jesus Christ these sublime prophesies were perfectly realized and fulfilled in their most exalted conceptions as well as in ineir minutest details, and In no other person have they been so ful filled. It is a most remarkable and suggestive fact, well-known to Bible students, that Jesus Christ lived and died with the abiding consciousness and conviction that In Himself was being consumated the hopes and as pirations, the predictions and ideals or Old Testament prophecy. He recognized Himself as sent from God to fulfill that, which was written. We must account for this unique consciousness in Jesus; and it can not be accounted for on naturalis tic princciples else all men would have been possessed of this same consciousness. Reason, the highest reason, teaches that such a con' sciousness as Jesus had in relation to Old Testament prophecy must correspond to fact. Thus it is that the voice of Prophecy bears testi mony to our Lord Jesus and testi mony to Jesus of the most substan tial kind; because the unique con sciousness of Jesus and the voice of Prophecy were one in ideal and in realization. II. PROVIDENCE. All the world, Christian and Pa gan, with the exception of a few atheists and materialists, believes in the guiding hand of a Wisdom and Power known as Providence. Their notions may be vague, confused, and indefinite,, but men are forced to be live In a Power and Wisdom, which, in spite of human frailties, follies, and sins, shapes the destiny of our race to moral ends. Men are led to believe that all. the immeasurable forces of the universe, visible and invisible, natural and supernatural. in all their tremendous sweep and mysterious intricacy, somehow tend to lift man out of darkness and sin into the light of Divine love and trust, and into harmony with the Divine government. "The world rolls out of darkness into light, "and men believe, it will soon be "day break every where," because of this Providence. Now the amazing fact to which I call attention is this: Since Jesus came and taught men not one addi tional ,ray of . moral and spiritual light has, come to our race. Since Christ and Hla apostles .taught .the world has made marvelous progress In every thing .except, the knowledge of God. New discoveries and new inventions wlthbut numbers; prog' ress In the arts, progress 'in the sci ences, progress in DhIlosophy,,.prpg- ress in . government . Drosress growth, development in every de partment of thought and action hut the knowledge of God and the eter nal beyond. Jesus said the full and final word about religion .because tie was 'what He claimed (to be the true Light the Light of the world, the Light of life, j .Every man who woald know, God mast go; hack to Jesus Christ. - The 8un being now risen, there can be no- other light Provi dence bas given perpetual witness to Jesus as the Son, of God In, this:, The tlon. ' History records ' the influence of Jesus among the nations. . His-' tor ULthe., visible, results . of ..Inyistr ble forces. It cannot be successful ly denied, that the nations which have honored: Christ have been the happy, prosperous, and powerful na tions. Political liberty baa only succeeded where the Gospel haa per meated the masses. Every nation that ppposed Christ is either dead or dying. The Gospel has never failed to give security; stability, and poten cy to the nations which have accept ed it. It purifies and exalts society. It has produced the best type of manhood and womanhood. It has renewed the very face of nature among the heathen, and changed rude savages into sons of God. The Gospel has always niade Individuals and nations strong and happy, and the highest civilizations have orily come as the Gospel has been accept ed. Where Is the fool so bold and shameless as to declare that the best things have come to the world as the result of preaching and believing a lie? The fruits of the Gospel indi cate the claims of Jesus. So potent has been the influence of Christ in human history, that He has changed the world's date line. The green eyed, scoffing, unbeliever may sneer at Christ, but he can't transfer a foot of land, he can't write a love letter to his sweet-heart, nor can he inscribe an epitaph on his mother's gravestone without paying unwil ling .homage to the Influence of Je sus. He must write A. D. 1910 the year of our Lord. Jesus the crucified has changed the world's reckoning point. He was crucified as a degraded criminal. If He was not the Son of God, how does it hap pen that some other criminal has not changed the world's date line, In serted His name on the world's great monuments and cathedrals, and written his name in all the great books for nearly two thousand year? The voice of history is that of the centurion: "Truly this was the Son of God." IV. EXPERIENCE. Experience is the subjective con sciousness of objective reality. Ex perience is what takes place in a man's own soul. Now, some of the most potent facts in the universe lie in the realms of consciousness. Many of the most real things are in visible. Spiritual realities can only be fully known in consciousness Experience is the highest, the final and the infallible test of the claims of Jesus. When a soul has light it When a soul haa life, it When a soul has love, it When a soul has joy, It When a soul has pardon If knows It. "He that hath the Son hath the witness in himself." Millions of men and women, bur dened with sin and guilt, have gone to Christ in penitent faith and pray er, and have suddenly obtained the evidence in their own consclouness that God through Christ bad par doned their Bins, and made them new creatures. ,John Wesley is not the only man who felt his heart strangely warmed when he trusted Christ alone for salvation. Paul Is aot the only man who could say: . "I know in whom have believed." Jesus said that He came to save men from sin;, and. it is a glorious fact a great multitucde, which . no man can number, have washed their robes . and , made them white In the blood of the Lamb, and have lived soberly and righteously and godly in this present world. .There are those , In. this audience who know from experience . that Jesus la . the Christ, because He has saved them from their sins. , VANDY perfec.
