An Appeal from a Woman to North Carolina Manhood. Last week the secretary of the State Board of Health received lutar In which thft following faC were set forth: The writer was orphan girl, and, judging from neat ness, arrangement, and the general tone of the letter, she is a lady refinement and culture. She is daurhter. by birth and residence pf North Carolina. A little over a ye ago a relative with whom she capita, which means a tax of only one-fourth of a cent on every one hundred dollars worth of the State's pioperty. Our appropriation to the State Sanatorium for the Treatment of Tuberculosis is so small that it is uc'-estary for the few who enter to pay a dollar a day ror treatment The appeal of this woman is only one of many such appeals; she sim ply represents a class. It is hoped that the State press will bring this vital matter to the attenlon of those whom It concerns. It Is really ev eiv man's business whose heart is warmed with a real sympathy for suffering, helpless humanity. What will you have your State do? If !t Is your duty to help save these lives, tell your representative in the aext Legislature to assist in making adequate provision for the public health. The little ones feel at home in my studio. The hundreds I have photo graphed prove this. Nice weather permitting, bring them. Best work. Newest styles. At Green's. Want a nice residence cheap? See W. B. Biggers, 617 East Franklin. Mr. ! ah d KilliaJ spent Wednesday i with his parents, L. C. Klllian. He I, game of Atlanta, Thursday here and Mrs. W, to attend the year or two. He is also an expert WV I linotype operator. His many friends living fell a victim of consumption! J here were pleased to see him again. The young lady, then forced to earri her own living, moved to another P"Fancy and plain articles of vari- State. She is now, herself, in the early or curable stage of the disease which she undoubtedly contracted while nursing her relative. Why does she write? What does she want? Simply to live. She has not the dollar a day which it is nec essary for her to pay in order to en ter the State Sanatorium for the Treatment of Tuberculosis. But why write the secretary of the State Board of Health for this vital ly necessary help? Because that of ficial is commanded to discharge the public-health obligations of some- tiling like 200,000 ablebodled men. In this capacity, he Is the personal V ... . V. WUV Ul tilC 1X1, ana tnis orpnan girl a appeal is, therefore, to every North Carolina man. Then it is to you, able-bodied urau, uat in is iNortn Carolina wo man comes for help. Woman appealing to man to save her life! A man, too, who claims the Inspiration of a noble parentage, a man who considers himself a pure blooded patriot, ready to die. If nec essary, for North Carolina nr tnr North Carolina womanhood. All that Is asked Js a mere pittance in the form of a health appropriation. Five or ten cents from the average man would be enough.- But oh, the horror of that word taxi Is K more horrible than the unnecessary death of a helpless woman? ?So far. North Carolina manhood, peaking through their representa tives, has seen fit to make so small a public-health appropriation that our State, which Is fourteenth In popula tion, stands about thirty In her public-health appropriation.
