Gastonia, North Carolina Swan-Slater Co. jfffiSJ BBS ausplcesof The Charlotte News. The crowd was woefully disappointed, however, for the flyer didn't fly. The claim made was that the wind was too strong and it was announced that another attempt would be made this afternoon. Aside from seeing the machine, which was on exhibition on the fair grounds, and seeing the en gineer operate his engines and pro peller, the spectators got nothing for their trouble. The Piedmont Telephone & Tel egraph Co. has done the city a splen did service by placing at two con venient public places, namely on M'ain avenue in the business section and at "Greasy Corner," two police telephone booths. Each policeman has a key to the booths and can use them either in daytime or at night though they will be especially, con venient for use at night. Manager R. B. Babington originated this idea, which is a novel one, and has Installed these police booths In every town where the company has a tele phone system. They are maintained at the expense of the telephone com pany. This arrangement Is a most happy one for the night policemen and Manager Babington is due the thanks of the entire town for this manifestation of public spirit.
