Stowe returned yesterday from Asheville where he attended the good roads convention. , Belmont Lodge, A. F. and A. M., will hold an important communica tion Friday night, the 13th. The lodge is in a flourishing condition with several candidates in line for degree work. New Hope News Notes. Correspondence of The Gaette. NEW HOPE, July 12. The Home Demonstration Club met with Mrs. J. V. Hanna July nth. The meeting was to be at Mrs. Chalmers Elmore's, but since it was a canning demonstration it was decided to go to Mrs. Hanna's where there was better shade. Mrs. M. P. Shetley had charge of the can ning. The canning or plums, app.es, peaches, baked apples, beans, beets, kohl-rabi, okra and squash was de monstrated. The things were pre pared and packed in the jars in the morning. Then after a most enjoya ble picnic dinner, the jars were put In the canner. While the jars were processing. Mrs. Hanna, the presi dent, called the members together for a business meeting. There was an ice cream supper at McLeans Chapel Saturday night. Several colored people in this com munity have typhoid fever. Quite a number of white people have taken the fever vaccine. Mrs. A. M. A., last night inspected the members of the Machine Gun Troop, cavalry, and de clared the organization a part of the North Carolina National Guard. There were 110 men present for the inspection of the total number of 116 who have enlisted, there being several living in distant towns who could not reach the city in time. The inspection was held In the armory on West-Airline avenue. While a great many have been en listed in excess of the total number necessary to complete the organiza tion.
