FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1919. GASTON'S MACHINE GUNNERS. It is with a feeling of pleasure and of pride that The Gazette gives lilierally of it space today to an article by ('apt. R. G.Cherry of Company A, 11,1th Machine Gon Battalion, .'Kith Division (The "Old Hickory Division" and sometimes styled by the Knglish the "Wildcat Division") giving at some length a detailed report of the activities of that unit of the army in the great world war. It is in tensely interesting throughout and we have uo doubt that Gazette readers will find it n. Not only is it interesting but it is valuable liecause it is history. Writ ten by tbe laptain of the company it is authoritative, i'osnilily sometime a more elaborate record of the activities of this company may be written but in so far as accuracy goes it will !e no improvement over this article. We suggest to Gazette readers that they not only rjja.l it but that they put it in their scrap books for future reference. This article came in the ahape of a letter to Mrs. A. A. Me Lean, of Gastonia, and we are under obligation to Mrs. McLean for permis sion to give it wider publicity through the columns of The Gazette. It was with feelings of extraordinary pride that Gastonia watched Gregg Cherry, just launching out on a promising career as a member of the local bar, lay aaide his law books, his prospects, his ambitions, and throw himself body and oal into the task of organizing and j training a company of machine gunners, i The entire town looked on with admira ! tion and when this splendid company of young men, largely recruited from Gas Ionia, left for camp they not only car ried with them the hopes and prayers of the people of the town but they knew that the town was expecting them to make good. And they did make good to an ex tent even beyond the expectations per haps of many of their friends. They helped break the Hindenburg line and engaged in some of the fiercest fighting of the entire war. They stood like a atone wall against the advancing hordes of ruthless Huns. ' ' They shall not pass" was evidently their slogan, too, and the Hon found them adamant. It is a pleasing reflection that, despite their many exposures and the fierce en gagements in which they participated, the eompany lost only one man killed and a small Dumber wounded. j These men are coming back some one ' it these days, pretty soon perhaps, and -;n . ti,.,... i A0WU4 "it "chvii": in.,,, nil" ..jrii arms, as they will also old Company B, srhich was placed in the 105th Engineers and which did just as valiant fighting. When they do reach home the member of both these companies will find a warm and cordial welcome back to the old home town, which will take a day off and cele brate the event in great style. It is the purpose of The Gazette to is sue this article at an early date in booklet form so it may be more easily preserved and more easily handled.
