AGS TWO. THX GASTOSIA GAZXTTZ. WlDNESDAY, JtTLT 23, IMS. fHE Gastonia Gazette WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 1919. WHY IT WAS DEFEATED. Speaking of the failure of the recent good roads, bond issue in Catawba coun tr. The Lincoln County News says: "This regretal.le act of a progressive mud prosperous teople is due mainly to starting wrong. In the early meeting of the Hii-kory Chamber of Commerce and the county commissioners office every body put forward a plan for applying or apportioning the money. By the time Mr. Stikeleather, the highway commis sioner, got to the county and succeeded in getting the sky pilots down to earth, the scrapping over the division of the funds had created breaches in the ranks of good roads advocates so wide that they could not Ik- dosed up before the election. The bonds lost votes in many precincts because the opponents of bonds used very effectively the first big mis take of the friends of the bonds in pro posing that one hard surface road be built through the county. It was con tended that very little would be left for other roads. After the hard surface road proposition was abandoned, many of its advocates became dissatisfied or disin terested. Votes were lost in both camps. "If the spirit of the special act and the purpose of the county commissioners to first make sure of the bonds and defer all questions about the apportionment and use of the money until after the election had been the campaign cry, there would have been no doubt of success. ' ' The News is right when it declares that the county officials tried to cook their hare before they caught it. There ahould have been no talk of which roads Vere to te built or where the money was to be spent, or such questions as this un til the money was in hand. , As it was, breaches were created, one section of the county going against the bonds because another part of the county was to get all the good roads. do him a greater service. For what they've got out of it, beyond the satisfac tion of honest workmen in a good job, there never has been in North Carolina an aggregation of brothers who have made a Jhier contribution than the Pages have made and are making to the pul lie." JESS TOO GOOD LOOKING TO LOSE, SAYS FAIR FAN. f By International News Service.) COH'MBl'S, OHIO. July 21. tdie was a fair fan and was interested m the outcome of the big fight. She stood lis tening to a big voiced announcer on one of the Columbus street corners. "It just can't be so." said the fair one as she turned to another fair one who didn 't seem to care much about the fight and who seemed to be listening to what the announcer said just because she was awaiting her "fanette" friend. 'Why can't it be true.'" asked disinterested one. Oh, .less Willard was so good mg, it just can i be true, she sai she wined a strav tear from a prettv of evelashes. Then some "mere man" made it all the more hard to bear by reminding the fair admirer of .less that "good look; Ion 't cut no ice in prize fiightin' the look 1, as row CONCERNING THE PAGES. Concerning the gubernatorial race and the gossip emanating therefrom, The Concord Tribune thinks The (iazette has the situation summed up fairly well, while The Raleigh Times thinks we have made an unfair charge against Bob Page. We quote The Tribune: "Little gossip is heard here concerning Bob 1'age, but his admirers seem to be placing their hopes on the bitter fight to be made by Morrison and Cardner.
