Prices For Eggs Set High Record Raleigh, October 1. Prices receiv ed by farmers for eggs in the Nation in August averaged 40.8 cents per dozen, the highest for t ie month since 1920, compared with 33.0 a year ago and 23.6 cents for the 10-year (1934-43) average, Curtis Tarleton, statistician with the N. C. Department of Agriculture, reports. Prices advanced 2.9 cents per" do zen during the month ending August 15, compared with 1.8 cents last year and a 10-year average of 1.7 cents. Shell egg markets were very firm at the beginning of August, with supplies scarce at all levels of trading. This situation gradually gave way to increasing easiness until at the close of the month only the finest quality large fresh eggs brought OPA ceilinfprices. Cower qualities had dropped well below ceiling levels and under-gradc, cneeKs, and dir ties were difficult to move. Tarleton said that chicken prices averaged 28 6 cents per pound live weight on August 15, the highest price for the month in 36 years of record, compared with 24.1 cgnt a year ago and 16.0 cents for the 10 year average. Marketings of live and dressed poultry through regular channels increased seasonally during August with a sharp upturn toward the close of the month, following ter mination of War Food Qrderi U'i and 125 and the suspension of WFO 119. Poultry prices continued at ceiling levels during the month but ample supplies and lower prices are generally anticipated for the near future. Turkey prices in mid-August were the highest for the month in 12 years of record 33.8 cents per pound live weight, compared with 30.7 cents a year ago and an average of 16.1 cents. 0 The Poultry Department at State College has a turkey family of eight daughters that shows no broodiness. The average number of eggs per bird i up to Septefnber 1 was 140.4 eggs, i and five hens were laying.
