MOBILE HOMES SOUTHIRN FINIS . t none m? No. 3822 Whispering Pima R as tour arte the South'* Largest N 'V ? ' BY JIM DIAN Some cynics are fond of saying that conservationists are full of grandiose ideas on how to stop pollution, but short on effective plans and solutions. Of course, these cynics invariably have neither grandiose plans nor solutions - and in fact are too selfish or stupid to even recognize the problem. Water pollution is one of the biggest problems fscing this nation in the century. And yet, only a handful of people seem to understand the common ? sense steps that are necessary if we are to clean up our polluted waters. Dr. Lois Sharpe, an environmentalist with the League of Women's Voters, spoke recently at the Fontaru Conservation Roundup. She understands the problem, and best of all, she offers a seven - part solution. (1) "If we assume that no one has the right to pollute, then the cost of waste management must be part of the normal cost of doing business, even if this means fewer products at increased cost." (2) "Industry must consider changing its processes of manufacture in order to produce less pollution, instead of merely looking for improved waste treatment processes." (3) "Everyone who usss a sewage disposal plant should be charged user fees on a fair share basis. Each home should be assessed fairly, and each industry. Charges should be reflected in both the quantity of waste disposed and how difficult it is to treat." (4) "Some industries now threaten to move to other states if pollution laws are tightened. No state will be free from this threat until all states have strict pollution regulations." (5) "Profit motives should be applied to industries who pollute. In Vermont, a new law permits the state to charge industries for authorized discharges which reduce water quality downstream. Not only are the fee* paid by industry an incentive for them to improve their waste treatment, but these fees are uaed by the state to further improve water quality." (6) "It is time we stopped thinking of re ? used water as distasteful. We must use our water, recycle it, and use it again and again. This must apply not only to industry, but also for domestic and recreational uses." (7) "We must adopt a more realistic pricing system for the use of water. At present, those who use the most water are being charged the least, proportionately. Water prices should encourage less use, and those who use the most water should be charged the highest fees." "The homemaker was pleased and her family enjoyed the cake," Dorothy Johnson, associate home economics extension agent, relates.
