ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED Mr. and Mrs. John McNatt Gillis of Fayetteville have announced the engagement of their daughter, Mary Jane Stewart, to Roy Turner of Fairfield, California. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Turner, also of Fairfield. Miss Gillis is a granddaughter of Mrs. Malcolm Dobbin Gillis, Sr. of Fayetteville and the late Mr. Gillis. The bride-elect is a graduate of Peace College, Raleigh arid North Carolina State University, where she majored in sociology. She has done graduate work at North Carolina State University, and is now teaching with the Cumberland County schools. Mr. Turner served in the United States Air Force. He attended Napa College, Napa, California and is a student at Solano College, Fairfield, California. The wedding will take place August 8 at Galatia Presbyterian Church. Miss Cindy Smith of Durham spent the weekend with her grandmother, Mrs. Mary D. McBryde. Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Harris spent the weekend in Roxboro and attended the funeral Sunday of George Gentry. | BRIDGE I Baker's Dozen Mrs. Sam Cooper and Mrs. Younger Snead Jr. were co ? hostesses for the Baker's Dozen Bridge Club on Thursday night at the Snead home. They served snacks and Cokes during progressions. frizes went to Mrs. Dave Russell for high score, to Mrs. Bob Kilby feu second high, and to Mrs. NeillYlcFadyen Jr. for hingo. Mrs. Webb Club members and one visitor, Mrs. Raz Autry, met with Mrs. Martin Webb on Thursday night. Dessert and coffee were served when guests arrived, and punch and nuts during progressions. Mrs. Walter Coley was winner of the high score prize and Mrs. Autry received the consolation. Bingo prizes went to Mrs. Joe Upchurchand Mrs. June Johnson. Club members presented a bracelet to Mrs. Carroll Wilburn. The Wilburns are moving soon to Drake's Branch, Va. Jerri Ann Vanhoy Honored Thursday Miss Jeiri Ann Vanhoy of Ashley Heights was honored on Thursday of last week with a miscellaneous bridal shower held at the home of Miss Becky Conoly on E. Donaldson Ave. The honoree received a corsage of pink rosebuds and hostess gifts were Tupperware and an electric griddle. The refreshment table, spread with white damask, held a two - tiered centerpiece of pink roses. The 25 guests were served bridal cakes, punch, nuts and mints. Miss Vanhoy is to be married to Dale A. C. Strickhouser ? Hollingsworth Wedding Held Here Sunday MRS. JOSEPH ANDREW STRICKHOUSER Miss Gloria Jean Hollingsworth became the bride of Joseph Andrew Strickhouscr at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Raeford Presbyterian Church. The Rev. C.A. Cooper Jr. of Marietta, Ga. performed the double ring ceremony. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Estelle Davis Hollingsworth of Durham. Parents of the bridegroom are Mr. and Mrs. William Fredrick Strickhouser of Charlotte. Josef Privejte presented a program of nuptial music. The church was decorated with palms, altar candles and baskets filled with galdioli, pompons and yellow chrysanthemums. Miss Sharon Siler of Silet City was maid of honor for her cousin and Mrs. Larry Lee Moser was matron of honor. They wore floor - length, orange, green and white print dresses fashioned with scoop necklines and puffed sleeves accented with shoulder bows, and A - line skirts with horizontal prints at the hemline. They wore yellow daisies in their hair and they carried nosegays of yellow and white daisies, gold and orange sweetheart roses, accented with moss green bows. Wearing identical dresses and flowers to those of the honor attendants, the bridesmaids were Miss Margaret Ann Strickhouser of Atlanta. Ga., sister of the bridegroom; Miss Suzanne Hayes of Fremont and Miss Betsy Duke of Virginia Beach, Va., former suitemates of the bride at N.C.S.U. Honorary bridesmaids were Misses Robin Clark, Jackie Bray and Pamela Heath, all of Raeford. Their solid - color dresses were yellow, orange and moss green and they carried arm bouquets of yellow roses tied with moss green bows. Children in the wedding were Robin Baxley and Maria Townsend, flower girls, and Lawrence Calloway, ring bearer, all cousins of the bride. The bride was given in marriage by her uncle, William A. Davis. She sore a gown of silk organza fashioned with portrait neckline, empire bodice with baby doll sleeves accented with venise lace and satin ribbons, flounccd hemline trimmed with lace and ribbon and chapel train, flounced and trimmed to match her gown. Natural flowers of baby's breath and sweetheart roses formed her headpiece which held the illusion veil, and she carried a nosegay of white sweetheart roses, baby's breath and white ribbons. The bridegroom's father served as best man. Ushers were Kenneth Edward Hollingsworth of Durham, brother of the bride, Stephen Michael Hassell of Elizabeth City, Mark Roger Seagle of Lincolnton and Keith William Greer of Boone, former college roommates of the bridegroom. Mrs. William N. Davis, grandmother of the bride, and members of her family were hosts for a barbeque supper of Saturday evening. The 100 guests included the wedding party, relatives and out of town guests. The bride is a graduate of Hoke High School and is a student at N.C. State University. The bridegroom is a 1971 graduate of N.C. State University. Miss Hollingsworth Honored W ith Kitchen Shower Teresa Moser was hostess at her home with a kitchen shower for Miss Gloria Hollingsworth on Saturday, May 15. The hostess presented a corsage of white carnations to the bride ? elect on her arrival. A color scheme of green was carried throughout. The refreshment table was covered with a white cloth centered with an arrangement of roses and green candles. Lime punch, cake squares, mints and nuts .vere served to 12 guests. Luncheon For Visitors Sgt. and Mrs. Michael N. Moore were honored with a luncheon Wednesday of last week at the Otis Webb home. Mrs. Moore, who is the former Linda Webb, is also an Air Force sergeant. The Moores were enroute from Eglin AFB, Florida to duty in Ankara, Turkey. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Otis Webb, Billy and Sally Jo, Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Webb Jr., Jackie and Vickie of Southport, Mrs. Ducan Hanes of Fayetteville, J.A. Affairs Fete The Shapiros Neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. Cliandler Roberts were hosts for a supper Saturday night at Gatlins Pond honoring Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Shapiro of San Francisco. Mrs. Shapiro is the former Mary Roberts. Hosts were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gatlin, Mr. and Mrs. L.M. Lester, Mis. Belton Wright, Mrs. Frank Tapp, Mrs. R.A. Matheson, Mr. and Mrs. Graham Monroe, Mrs. Dean White and Mr. and Mrs. Julian Wright. Thursday evening relatives gathered at the Roberts home for a covered dish supper given in honor of the Shapiros. The 20 guests were from Charlotte, Smithfield, Fayetteville and here. Upchurch Recital Held Friday Mrs. Lewis Upchurch presented her piano students in recital Friday night at the Civic Center.
