A. Mclnnis County Starts Early Program The county will operate two pre-school programs similar to Head Start this year at West Hoke and Scurlock schools. The students were chosen from applicants to the three Head Start classes. The county's program was begun this week and the Head Start program will begin Sept. 9. The county program is funded under Title I money from the federal government and the Head Start classes are funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity. This is the first year the county has had a pre-school program and it is also the first year the Head Start program has operated during the full school year. There was no summer Head Start program here this year. "Female type" or gynoeclous hybrid cucumbers bear earlier than other cucumbers and usually bear a great many more fruits on a plant. This is because almost all of their flowers are female, thus capable of setting fruit. The General Meeting of W.M.S. was held at Tabernacle Church Monday night. The Extension Homemakers Gub community picnic at Rockfish last Saturday evening was an enjoyable affair. The picnic supper was delicious with tea and lemonade for drinks. Gillis Ray who had surgery at Cape Fear Valley Hospital got home last Friday. The Rev. Russell Fleming, pastor of Galatia Church will preach at Phillipi next Sunday. The W.S.C.S. of Parker Church met last Tuesday with Mrs. Margaret Panned. Only the regular services were held at Pittman Grove and Parker Churches last Sunday. Guests of Mrs. Floyd Monroe last Saturday p.m. were Miss Alma Capps and Mrs. Hubert Capps of FayetteviUe. Mrs. Marshall Newton, Mrs. Bess Newton and Mrs. Mary Davis Mclnnis arrived home last Friday after a month's visit with Mrs. Bess Newton's sons in Alaska. Mrs. Ethel D. Gibson who has been a patient at Southeastern General Hospital at Lumberton got home last Wednesday. She is doing fine they say and her guests Sunday were Mr. and Mrs. Sid Sumner and children, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Freeman Jr. and children and Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Gibson of Stedman. Mrs. Faith Nelson who recently moved to Rockfish was from Dundarrach before she moved to Virginia and she was there only a short time before she came to Rockfish. We welcome her and her daughters to this community. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Epps and family attended the graduation of their daughter Lynda Carol from the School of Radiologic Technicology at Rex Hospital Raleigh, last Friday night August 27th. Miss Epps was presented the Mallinekrodt Award for outstanding performance in the class of 1970-71. She has accepted a position at Moore Memorial Hospital at Pinehurst. Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Blackwell of Fayetteville were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Overton Sunday p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Yeargan of Durham visited Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Brock, Mr. and Mrs. James Culp and son Gary, and Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Bundy last Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. L.B. Bundy, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Shepley and family, and daughters, Kayeand Faye and Ann, Neill and Johnny Wright, Mrs. William Wright and Rocky Wood spent last Saturday at Carolina Beach. Mrs. Lawrence Barnard and daughter, Tanna and Mrs. C.H. Doree visited Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Barnard of Cheraw S.C. last Thursday and Mrs. Doree stayed for a longer visit with her daughter, Mrs. Gordon Barnard and family. Mr. and Mrs. Donald Wood and children Donald Jr., Becky, Barry and Todd spent the weekend camping at Sherwood Forest Camping Ground, S.C. Mr. and Mrs. Billy Posey and sons Anthony and Mark also spent the weekend camping at Sherwood Forest Camping Ground. Mrs. A.W. Wood of Fayetteville was a dinner guest of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Monroe and sons Joe and Ronald last Sunday and Mrs. Wood had Mr. and Mrs. Marion Wood as her supper guests Monday night. Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Talum of Fayetteville and Mr. and Mrs. Bubby Wright spent the weekend at Carolina Beach. CLUB PICNIC HOMEMAKERS The Philippe Club met at Waldo's Beach last Wednesday for their annual August picnic. Attendance was good, the food plentiful and delightful to the taste. It was reported a real success in every way. Roy Jones had Surgery at Moore Memorial Hospital last Thursday. He was doing fine at last account. Mr. and Mrs. Ruel Johnson and son Charles, who have been living with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Overton for several weeks moved to Lafayette Village last Friday. They will live there until they build a house near to her parents. Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Capps of Sanford spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Barefoot. Mr. Capps has inproved much since he was critically injured in an automobile wreck several months ago. Mrs. Dan Bradshaw left for her home in Fayetteville the first of this week after spending a while with Mr. and Mrs. David Koonce. Mrs. Gilbert Ray, Bobby and David spent the latter part of last week with Mrs. Jimmy Hodges of Washington, D.C. They toured the city and enjoyed the trip very much. They got home Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. B.B. Bostic spent last Wednesday with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cameron of Carolina Beach. Mrs. A.W. Wood had as her guests last Thursday and Friday, her sister Mrs. J.B. Cole and granddaughter Kimberly Davis of Dillon, S.C. Louis Rosseter of Pennsylvania came home with Joe Monroe from Lenoir Rhyne College last Wednesday and spent the rest of the week with Joe and Ronald Monroe and thier parents, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Monroe. He left Sunday for the University of South Carolina to study for his masters degree. Mr. and Mrs. Junior Long visited Mrs. Bill Davis and Miss Mary McFadyen at Cape Fear Valley Hospital last Friday night. They found them both doing O.K. and Mrs. Davis expected to come home soon. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Ray and son Thomas last Friday p.m. were Mrs. Ray's nephew and his wife and son, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Mooring Jr. and son Dewey III ofCary. Mrs. Will Wood ot Fayetteville and Mrs. Clara Everett of Rt. 2 Raeford were guests of Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Ray and son Thomas Monday p.m. Mr*. Duncan McCraney's nephew John A. Gainey of Cypreu, Calif. came Monday and ipent a few days with Mr. and Mr*. McCraney and daughter* Carolyn and Thereta. Mr*. G.A. Monroe and Mr*. Herman Kuonce spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Cameron and family at Carolina Beach. Mr. and Mr*. Lacy Koonce and ion* Lacy III and Thomas of Lumberton viiited in the home of Mr. and Mr*. Herman Koonce, where only Mr Koonce was at home. Mr. and Mr*. Mickey Pollard of Greenville visited her grandparents Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Ray last Wednesday and Mr*. Ray stayed for a longer visit with her grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Ray j^,. unc, Thomas Ray. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Monroe and children took a trip to Georgia and saw Six Flags Over Georgia week before last and came back by Myrtle Beach. VC. and stayed a while. Then ast Saturday they all went White Lake for the day. Dewey Sessoms talked with his brother Wilson Sessoms of Glenn Bernie, Md., and Wilson expects to visit relatives here soon, probably the last of this " week. Johnny and Alex Kennedy and Lacy Guin of Pinehurst were guests of Miss Mary Priest and her brothers Walter and Francis Priest last Sunday. They also visited Clarence Kennedy, who is a patient at Highsmith Rainey Memorial Hospital. They reported that he is receiving visitors now. Mr. and Mrs. Doug Monroe also visited Miss Mary Priest and her brothers Walter and Francis Sunday p.m. Sr. Citizens Senior Citizens Friendship Club will meet at Raeford United Methodist Ch"rchJ Tuesday at 2:30 p.m Wendell Young, county agricultural agent, will speak on the care of shrubbery during the fall and winter months. Club members are asked to bring old newspapers to the meeting. A prize will be given or the person bringing the largest stack.
