BUCKS BOWl.F.RS ? The Hoke junior bowling league pose outside their bus before going to Favetteville for Saturday league play. The new activity has 50 keglers. Jr. Bowlers Start Play With 5 Teams In League One step towards building a full - fledged youth program in Hoke County was taken recently when the Reverend Thomas Walker organized the first Junior Bowling League in Raeford. With the assistance of Hoke High Principal Raz Autry and members of the Student Council, the Rev. Mr. Walker met with a group of students who expressed interest in the program. The initial trip to Fayetteville in early October produced 71 pre ? dawn risers for the Saturday outing. Since then, the group has stablized at 50 and has been divided into 10 five ? man teams. "The fact that these youth get up at 7 o'clock in the morning when they don't have too." Rev. Walker said, "indicates that they want to do something with their leisure time. Our task as concerned parents and adults is to provide something wholesome and productive." Raeford Mayor John K. McNeill lent his support to the program this week when he signed a proclamation declaring the week Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 as "Raeford Junior Bowling Week." The proclamation was issued in conjunction with activities in other cities throughout the Nation where Junior Bowling Leagues are organized and helps to commemorate the Silver Anniversary of the American Junior Bowling Congress (AJBC). The "Raeford Bucks League." coached by Rev. Walker, is using the Junior Bowling Week observance to sell AJBC anniversary decalsal 25 cents each, and to conduct a fund - raising campaign to defray bowling costs and hopefully, buy shirts for league members. One dollar contributions are asked of league supporters. The league, as presently constituted, is limited to freshman through senior grades. Membership in the AJBC, however, is open to II persons who have not reached their 22nd birthday by August I. "One of the reasons our league doe'il't include additional age groups is because I cannot work effectively with inanv more S??^?eagu^rle"e A ' ere"e ""d Bm,y keep 'he '""y for 'Heir teams lhe Huke iunior than the 50 boys and girls I now have." Mr. Walker said. When additional adult help is available. Rev. Walker said he hopes the program can be expanded to include those students in the elementary grades. Besides providing a wholesome atmosphere and excellent physical exercise, the AJBC program also offers high school students the opportunity to win a SI,000 scholarship and a four - day trip to the Nation's Capitol. This educational incentive is available only to high school seniors, who must fit their personalities, academic achievements and bowling prowess against other bowlers representing the 50 states. At the conclusion of the fund ? raising effort, the Junior Bowlers of Raeford will observe the 25th AJBC anniversary Dec. 4 at Lafayette Lanes in Fayetteville with a traditional cake - cutting at 0 a.m. After greetings from the Mayor Pro-Tem of Fayetteville - Mayor McNeill or Mayor Pro-Tem Frank Teal is expected to attend - the bowlers will resume league competition in pursuit of the first place trophy. All parents and interested persons are invited to take part in the celebration. AJBC SPECIAL Members of the Raeford Bucks Junior Bowling League are conducting a fund drive through Dec. 4 to gain financial support for their Junior Bowling program. The league was organized last month under the supervision of the Rev. Thomas Walker with the support of Hoke High principal, Raz Autry. Raeford Mayor John K. McNeill endorsed the program by proclaiming the week of Nov. 28 to Dec. 4 as Raeford Junior Bowling Week. Now, it is your turn. When a Junior Bowler calls on you, give him your support with a donation of SI or more. SOUTHERN PINES' NEWEST AND MOST UNUSUAL RESTAURANT c The LOE STEER INN FEATURING ....
