Tale phone 175 2131 The three State Representatives from the 21st District came to Raeford Tuesday and agreed that they appreciated Hoke's vote and welcomed the opinions of their constituents. They spoke and answered questions at a luncheon at the Civic Center hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. David Parnell of Parkton. who will take his first term when the Legislature convenes later this month, saw the greatest problem facing lawmakers to be the financing of state government with declining revenue. "It looks like the demands will he greater and the funds will be less." he told the group. Parnell outlined some of the demands such as the financing of the bast Carolina medical school and the proposed veteiinary school. Salary increases and the rising cost of education would also face the legislature. Parnell said. Henry Ward Oxendine, an attorney from Pembroke. put his legal background to use in viewing the upcoming session. He has requested assignment to the insurance committee, he said, as he said he believes there are many inequities in the insurance laws. Oxendine said, however, that he did not know enough about no-lault insurance to have formed an opinion yet. Oxendine said he also opposed the expansion of the state prison system. "Front a dollars and cents point of view, we ought to look for other solutions." he said. He suggested split sentences, with some active time and some probation, as a possible solution and also said he felt more judges and courts were needed. Money would be a problem. Oxendine agreed, and said he did not foresee either a tax increase or a tax cut He would not support the repeal of tax on food unless it were pari of a package proposal to compensate for the revenue lost, he told the group. Joy Johnson. Representative from banmont who is beginning his third lerm, spoke briefly, explaining that he was being treated for a virus. He had already made a committment in favor of repealing the food tax. Johnson told the group. When asked if he thought the repeal would go through. Johnson said he expected much pressure, as there was an organized campaign for repeal, as well as those against it. However, he stopped short of predicting the outcome, saying he thought the legislators would vote according to the wishes of their constituents. Johnson also asked for opinions from Hoke County on issues before the legislature and stressed that the delegation was representing all three counties. "I received some awful letters last year after a vote on a certain issue. If I had had your opinion before the vote was taken, it might have been different." Johnson said. "So send us your ideas and your desires before we vote or don't curse us afterwards."
