WORKINO ON TIU:. RAILROAD ~ Aberdeen and Rockfish employees put the track in order Monday. They also began work to smooth the railroad crossings in the city. Sunday School Lesson "Congratulations, you have been chosen...!" Those are exciting words, lor everyone wants to be chosen, to win recognition, to be singled out for some honor or privilege. We like the honor or privilege. We like the honor and we also covet the privileges that come to those who are "chosen." If someone regards us as "special," we usually receive "special" treatment too. This is the way the people of Israel sometimes felt about being God's "chosen people." Singled - out by God as "special," they gloried in their status and their expectations of the advantages that status would bring them. To a degree, they were correct: God had chosen them and set them apart as something "special." Of all the peoples of the world they were set apart. But what the people of Israel overlooked was the purpose behind this "special" status. God had chosen them, not to give them status, but a task! The whole purpose of his selection was that he had something for them to do. -ONE WAY ? Continued from page 1 Iront Mrs. John Campbell of St. Pauls Drive to either provide her with city water or remove her property from the city. They decided to take no fuithcr action other than to restate their offer to extend a ? ? inch water pipe from the adjoining I'pclturch property to hei properly line. City manager John Gaddy reported that the city had stopped work on the bank parking lot until the plans conform to the /lining ordinance and a building permit is issued. Gaddy also reported that work had begun that day on repair of the railroad crossings. Mayor McNeill told the council that the city had applied lor two federally funded projects: S40.000 lor city renovation and SIX.'.000 for drainage on Dickson Street to be matched by S.'O.OOOol city funds. The council directed Gaddy to investigate installation of a street light on lewis Street. BOARD ? Continued from page 1 Feb. _'P on lot construction lor a library at Hoke High and classrooms and libaries at Scurlock and West Hoke. Food County civil preparedness coordinator William Niven presented for the boards' signature a joint agreement for disaster aid between the county and the American Red Cross. The commissioners also agreed to donate food now stored for fallout shelters if it is needed for famine areas. Niven told the board that he had received an inquiry from the national civil defense office asking if the county would be willing to donate the food if it were needed to feed the hungry . The food is several years past its expected lifetime and will eventually have to be destroyed. Niven told the board. Appointed A Hoke County school teacher was appointed to fill a vacancy on the Sandhills Mental Health Center Board. The commissioners appointed Jack Johnson to serve as county representative on the advisory council. A lease was approved to rent for space on the county tower at the jail to the cable television company locating in Raefoid. The board also agreed to hire Robert Gatlin to establish house numbers for the College Drive and Thomasficld sections, acting on a request from the post office. In other business, the commissioners approved $30 additional funds for two high school students to attend a youth legislative session in assembly in Raleigh; signed a contract for electricity for the new county office building and approved a request for a new AFDC a eligibility specialist at the department of social services. To be sure, being "chosen" by God was still an honor. But much more than the honor was the responsibility it carried with it. The rtian who wins an election is in a sense, "honored" by the electorate, but after the victory celebration has died away, the person who has been "chosen" is expected to render public service. In a like manner, winning a place on the basketball team is an honor, but it is also a great responsibility and much is expected of the person who has been "chosen." This is what the writer of I Peter is saying to the New Testament churches:"...you are a chosen race...that you may declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness in to his marvelous light." (I Peter 2:9). They were "chosen" because God had a job for them to do. Being "chosen" means being a service to render for God. With the honor there went a responsibility and they could not be God's "chosen people" unless they were equally willing to work for him. As the old spiritual puts it: "...If you can't bear the cross. Then you can't wear the crown. In writing his second letter to Corinth, Paul reminded the Corinthians that as God's "special" people, they were therefore responsible for responding lo the needs of their fellow ? Christians in Jerusalem. They had a good reputation for their faith, their knowledge, and their love, but Paul was calling upon them to match this status with generosity towards those in need:"...as you excel in everything ? in faith, in utterance, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in your love for us--sce thai you excel in this gracious work also." (2 Cor. 8:7). Paul knew that if people really had the faith they claimed to have, they would also have a compassionate heart towards others. James also stressed this idea: "What does it profit, my brethren, if a man says he has faith but has not works?" Let the "chosen" people of God rejoice in their election by the Lord. But let them also just as enthusiastically accept the task he puts in their hands. Tax Load Locally, $370 Per Capita NHW YORK. Dec. 21 -- How big a lax load are residents of Hoke County carrying to meet the operating costs of their state and local governments'.' How does it compare with what people in other communities are paying? In line with the rising cost of goods and services generally, taxes in the local area have been climbing steadily. This has been the story, in varying degrees, in every part of the country. The latest figures show, for Americans as a whole, that the taxes levied by state and local governments averaged S577 per capita in the past year. It was an increase of $55 over the prior year. For residents of Hoke County, the tax load was approximately S570 per capita. By way of comparison, the average throughout the State of North Carolina was $425. representing a $48 rise over ihe previous year. In the South Atlantic States, the rate was $481. The figures are based upon a study made by the Commerce Clearing House, specialist in government finances, utilizing data obtained from the Department of Commerce. The finding is that it takes more money than ever before to operate the various state, county and municipal governments and to provide the public with necessary services in the fields of health, sanitation, education, welfare, police protection, roads and such. The tax burden is considerably larger in some states than in others. Rose Heads Subcommittee Congressman Charlie Rose has been named io head the Subcommittee on Family Farms and Rural Development. Rose is entering his second term as a HOUSING Continued from page I from which projects will Ire selected on a competitive basis. "We would expect more response from those areas thai arc experienced with providing housing," lie said. "If we have, say, 50 units allotted to Hoke County and no one applies, then they will go somewhere else." Applications may be considered sometime around April 15, he estimated. The funds are to help pay rent, not to build housing units. There are no low-rent housing units in Hoke County now, although a group met with the city council Monday to urge the city to investigate providing public housing. , An application for 50 units made to HUD several years ago was turned down. ? SCHOOL? Continued from page I Lynn Currie at Upchurch, replacing Phyllis Duncan who resigned to transfer to Statesville. They also approved Thdmas T. Grey, who will be assigned to Upchurch guidance department. The meeting of the district 8 school board association, of which D.R. Huff is president. Feb. 19 at Hoke High was announced Democratic member of the Committee on Agriculture where he also serves as a member of the Subcommittee on Tobacco and as a member of the Subcommittee on Oilseeds and Rice. Earlier this week Rose accepted a seat on the Committee on House Administration where he has been appointed chairman of an ad hoc subcommittee 011 computers by Committee Chairman Wayne L. Hays, of Ohio.
