S.C. Nine local sports parachutists qualified in the meet to compete in national competition to be held in Tahleqah, Okla. in July. Winners there will make up the United States team for world championship competition next year in Rome. Mark Limond, a staff member of Raeford Aviation based at the city airport, won best overall parachutist in the men's competition. Runner-up was Roy Hatch, of Rt. 1, Raeford, a Knit-Away employee. In the women's division, Judy Patrick, a nurse at the VA Hospital who lives at Rt. 1, Raeford, took best overall jumper. Runner-up was Nancy Wrenn. a Ft. Bragg housewife who is a member of Raeford Parachute Club. Five other local jumpers earned trips to the national meet. They are Bill Clendening, and Tom Kawlick, staff members at Raeford Aviation; Wayne George of Rt. 1, a Burlington employee; Rene O'Neill, of Rt. 1, who works at Knit-Away and Jack Wallace of Minnesota, who came to Raeford to train for the meets. Lumbee Has Slim Lead Lumbee Marval pulled away from a tie with Gentry's to take a one-game lead in Slow Pitch Softball action last week. Lumbee defeated Kennerty's 6-5 Tuesday night. McCain was downed 21-4 by Gentry's, which lasted only five innings. Lions defeated Kiwanis, 7-2, in the first youth team game of the season, | Tuesday. Wednesday night saw Carolina Turf defeat Hoke Concrete 3-2, and Virgil's whipped SPGA 10-3. Results of the Wednesday youth game were not available. In Thursday night action, Lumbee Marval downed McCain 11-5, and Kennerty's beat Gentry's 8-5. The youth game was called on account of rain. All Friday games were rained out and have been rescheduled for this Friday. Tennis Meet Is Planned A junior tennis tournament, open to all Sandhills youngsters ages 16 and younger, will be held June 7-8 by the Sandhills Tennis Association. Pee Wee Baseball Meeting Monday There will be a meeting Monday, June 9 al 10 A.M. at Armory Park for boys and girls ages 6 - 9 who are interested in Pee Wee baseball, the recreation department announced. Hoke Athletes Advance Seventeen Hoke County athletes qualified in sectional competition Saturday for the state Junior Olympic meet this Saturday in Raleigh. Kathy McMillan captured first place in three events, the 100 and 220 dashes and in the long jump, although her times and distances were not her best. She ran the 100 in 11 seconds, to equal her own state record, but posted only a 25.2 time in the 220 and a 19-5 mark in the longjump. Angela Davis earned a first in the discus and Glenda Blue took first in the shot put. Lula Beatty won the 100 meter low hurdles. Also winning a blue ribbon were Rose Parrish, a South Hoke student, in the long jump. The girls 440 relay team from South Hoke took a first in their age group. Members of the team are Rose Panish, Jennifer Leak, Alfreda Bratcher and Sylvia Kershaw. Second place winners were Lee Andrews in the one mile run for 9-year-olds and under; Sheila Holt in the 220 dash and Elizabeth Campbell in the 100 yard dash. The South Hoke boys 440 relay team of Anthony Brown, George McNeill, Eddie Blue and Ervin Jones took third. Other third place winners were Rose Parrish in the 100 yard dadt; Angela Davis in the shot put, Elizabeth Campbell in the longjump and Sharon McMillan in the long jump for 12-14-year olds. Fourth place winners, who do not qualify for state competition, were Archie Purcell in the mile run and Sheila Holt in the lOOyard dash. Ladies League Hoke Jaycees defeated Doby's 14-7 on May 28, after five and a half innings. Hollingsworth Barber Shop had a decisive victory over Pig 'n Oricken, 13-3. Last Monday, Hollingsworth defeated B&J Funeral, 13-11. Burlington defeated Doby's 6-0 due to an ineligible player. Players must be added to the roster 24 hours before the game to be eligible. Hoke Jaycees defeated Pig 'n Chicken 11-6 to fan the battle for first place between the Jaycees and the Barberettes. Certificates were given to students who participated in volleyball, basketball and Softball intermurals by Miss Pat Scott, Mrs. Brenda Ramsey, Parnell Miles and Stanley Callender. Cheerleaders received awards from Mrs. Ramsey. Special Olympics awards were prsented by W.K. Morgan to Sam Galbreth for winning a bronze medal. Blue ribbon winners were Leverne Campbell, Galbreth, Evelyn Douglas and James Handon. The First place winning tug of war team was Campbell, Lee Walters, Frank Purccll, Doris Roper, Barbara Page, Bobby Strickland, Mary Ellen Dimery and Larry Hamilton. Football players voted two awards to teammates: the defensive trophy for best defensive player to Marian Brock and the most valuable player award to Leonard Everette. In basketball, the most valuable player award for seventh grade went to Harold Thompson and the eighth grade's most valuable player was Terry Pcterkin. Eagles pitcher Eddie Jackson, with 51 strikeouts this season, was voted the most valuable player in baseball. The Coach's Award, given for outstanding ability, sportsmanship, determination, willingness to learn and participate, went to Gary Brayboy.
