Eagles Coach Cites 'Good Upchurch Team9 The Upchurch Middle School Eagle's basketball team, undefeated last year, are expected to have another good season this year. The Eagles begin their season Dec. 8 at Elizabethtown. Stanley Callender, coach, indicated that this year's team would be a good one. but has not looked as sharp as he would like in practice. "We have a good team, but we haven't played well together in practice. We need a lot of work to reach our full potentials," he said. "1 don't like to compare teams, but even though last year's team went undefeated, I believe we have a better team this year. We have good height, good speed, and better all - around players,' he added. "If we get off to a good start, hopefully; we will have another good year," he concluded. Playing post for the Eagles are Harold Thompson, 6-3, Howard McGregor, 6-0, Bryan Hales, 6-0, and Richard Blue, 6-0. Playing the wing positions are Calvin McGilvary and Wayne Cunningham. The guards are David Home, David Blue, David Bratcher. and Mitchell Jones. Ervin Jones, Charles Johnson, Tony Graham, Anthony Brown, and Anthony Thompson are the seventh graders that made the team. Girl's Basketball Is Started At Upchurch by Pat Scot I The Upchurch Eagles girl's basketball team start their season Monday, Dec. 8, at Elizabethtown. The team, coached by Pat Scoti, is composed of seventh and eighth graders. Cheryl Mclntyre and Sharon McMillan are the team's captains. Other members of the roster arc Marion Monroe, Doris Maynor, Brcnda Graham, Audrey Maynor, Missy Minor, Cohilda Black, Jill Capps, Carolyn Love, Judy Morrisey, Monique McClinton. and Iris Porter. "It's a first in a long time for the school, the girls, and the coach," said coach Scott. "I'm confident in the team's overall ability," she added. Burlington Names Two Promotions Edward J. Mack has been elected an executive vice president and chief financial officer of Burlington Industries. Inc. The announcement was made by Horace C. Jones, chairman and chief executive, f Mowing a regular meeting of the company's board of directors in New York. Jones also announced that Donald R. Hughes has been named treasurer, in addition to his continuing responsibilities as corporate controller. As treasurer, he succeeds John A. McLendon, who resigned the position last week. Both Mack and Hughes are located in Greensboro at the company's corporate offices. H oke ighlights kf Btrrf Ellis I hope everyone had a very enjoyable Thanksgiving. I look a vacation from work like everyone else last week, but I am back once again reporting the news at Moke High. The SAE (Student Action for Education) celebrated American Education Week, through November 13-17. An arrangement of flowers was presented to the office staff and Mr. Edwards, and another arrangement was placed in the library for the Hoke High faculty, staff, and students by the SAE. For Thanksgiving, ten members of the SAE went to the Raeford Nursing Home and visited the patients. Those going went on Monday, November 24, and are: Hope Williams, Linda Croft, Janet Morgan. Debbie Dees. Denise Brown, Ken McDonald. Barbara McCall, Arthur Kemp, Gwen McNeill, and Myosin Gordan. The group presented the Nursing Home with a fruit basket and then sang, accompanied by Ken McDonald on the guitar. The FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) held a meeting. Monday. December 1. with Kathy McMillan as the featured speaker. Kathy spoke of her travels and experiences during the past year. Everyone who was there enjoyed her talk tremendously. The next FCA meeting will be held on Sunday, IX'cember 7, at 7:30 P.M. It will be held in the Fellowship Hall of the Raeford First Baptist Church. Everyone is invited to come and participate and see a movie, entitled 'A Time To Run'. Over the Thanksgiving holidays. Thursday. November 27,and Friday, November 28, the Hoke High Marching Band participated in the Carousel Parade in Charlotte. Everyone said they had a great time, giving the Freshmen their first step to the rocky road of becoming a Senior, with many more bumps to come. After marching in Charlotte on Thursday, the band went to Monroe and participated in their Christmas parade on Friday before returning home early Friday evening. The Ekoh staff, having completed the selling of annuals, have begun work on the annual, doing layouts. taking pictures and typing copy in order to meet their first deadline. The Kkoli staff also worked hard this past week, organizing the taking of group pictures for the annual, making sure everyone was in the right place at the right time. The Miss Kkoh Pageant will be in two weeks on December 18, l')75, in the lloke High Gym at 7:30 I' M. The Kkoh staff is, as always, busy making plans for this. The pageant will be open to sophomores, juniors and seniors this year and a twenty ? five limit will be put on the number of contestants. A ten dollar entry fee is required for each contestant. All girls eligible, are urged to please hurry and enter. The basketball and wrestling ? seasons start soon, so everyone, again, let's see some support for the Bucks! Old-time Christmas Is TV Feature "An Old-Fashioned Christmas," presented by the N.C. agricultural extension service and the University of North Carolina television net work. will be telecast Wednesday, Dec. J at 7:30 P.M. and Friday, Dec. 5 at 3 P.M. over the educational television network.
