Phone Proposal The board also received a letter from the State Utilities Cpmmis #sion advising them that rates proposed by Carolina Telephone & Telegraph (CT&T) for extended area service between the Raetord ?Fayetteville-Ft. Bragg exchanges were acceptable for polling pur poses. According to Robert K. Koger, director of engineering services, the proposed increases would be $4.10 for a one party residential phone in Raeford and an S8.45 increase for a business phone, monthly. No date was given for the subscriber's poll to be taken to determine if Raeford customers approve the new service, but Koger said it would be 18-24 months before the new service could go into effect if it is approved. One copy is available at the agents office for information. For wheat, the three year average, the experimental N.C. 9 was the highest yielding entry. Some varieties were severely dam aged by the late freeze. McNair 701, Arthur 71, Abe and Oasis are other varieties that stood up well. Coker 74-27 had a good yield for a two year average. The summary for barley and oats varieties in the Coastal Plains test are available in the book. * * * Some tobacco growers will be through barning tobacco in the next two weeks. It is most important this year that the tobacco stalks be completely de stroyed as soon as possible after harvest is completed. Mosaic, potato virus Y and etch virus or vein banding have been very bad in the county this year. These things can be carried over the winter if the job is not done. This is also a year that it is most impoitant that your neighbor destroys his stalks too. Let's make a community effort out of it or yields might be affected next year. This will be a good ti. ie to rotate the tobacco out of the present fields, especially if you had a great deal of Mosa'c. ? * * All types of livestock should have access to all the clean water that they will drink during this warm weather. Gains in weight will be slow if water i- ...ii rioted Breeding animals will not gain weight or will not perform unless they cr^ kept cool and have plenty of wat r. Minerals and salt snould be supplied free choice during the summer months. Many livestock producers tend to forget the animals when they get busy har vesting crops. Year rouna care is a must if animals produce their best. Scotland Rest Home Sets Open House The Laurinburg District Rest Home will hold open house Aug. 29 at 3 P.M. The public is invited.
