In District Court 5 Plead Guilty In Marijuana Cases Five local men pleaded guilty to charges of possession of marijuana during Friday's District Court ses ( sion. Judge Joseph Dupree delayed verdicts on controlled substance charges brought against David Michael Costin, 16, and Halbert Ray Costin, Jr., 18, both of Rt. 1, Box 31, Raeford. The young men were placed on probation for two years on the conditions that they be obedient to their parents and pay a fine of $150 each plus court costs. The judge further stipulated that one-half of the fine and cost be paid during the summer of 1977 and the other half during the summer of 1978 with the court holding the money in escrow. Should the court receive a favorable report from the defendants' probation officer at termination of probation, the court reserved the right to remit the fine in its entirety. Terry Revels, of Rt. 1, Box 467, Red Springs, was placed on proba tion for two years after the verdict on a marijuana charge was delayed. Revels, 16, was also told to obey his grandmother and pay a fine of $150 plus costs. The conditions for payment followed the guidelines set eout in the Costin case. Chester Bullard, P.O. Box 583, Red Springs, was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for two years, after he pleaded guilty to the marijuana charges. Bullard was also fined $150 plus court costs. He was instructed not to violate any state narcotic laws during the two year probation. James Samuel McGill, Rt. 3, Box 466, Fayetteville, was sen tenced to six months in jail, suspended for two years, and fined $150 plus costs after he pleaded guilty to a marijuana possession charge. He was cautioned not to violate any narcotic control law for two years. McGill also pleaded guilty to a charge of driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor Friday. He received a 90-day suspended sentence, and was or dered to surrender his operator's license for 12 months. McGill was fined $150 plus costs, and granted a limited driving privilege. Thomas McLauchlin, Jr., Rt. 1. Harlon Jones, Rt. 1, Red Springs, pleaded guilty to break ing, entering and larceny and was sentenced to two years in jail, suspended for two years. The defendant was ordered to pay $10 restitution for the prosecuting wit ness, Polly Jacobs. Jones was also fined $50 plus costs. James Henry Jones, Saunders St.. Raeford, was given a six month suspended sentence after he plead ed guilty to a larceny charge. Placed on probation for two years, Jones was ordered to pay court costs. George Hollingsworth, Rt. 1, Box 848, Raeford. pleaded guilty to assaulting Fannie McRae, by strik ing her about the head with his fist and biting her hand. The defend ant was given a prayer for judgment continued for two years and was fined court costs. Zinford Chavis, Rt. 2, Box 91, was found not guilty of assaulting a female. The prosecuting witness. Diane Chavis, was charged court costs for frivolous and malicious prosecution. Johnny Scott, McCain, pleaded guilty to escape and was sentenced to 90 days in jail with this sentence running concurrently with the sen tence now being served for an assault with a deadly weapon offense. Connell McLeod, P.O. Box 645, Raeford, was found not guilty of an inadequate support of illegitimate child charge. Marvin Burns, Rt. 4, Box 54. Raeford, pleaded guilty to three worthless check charges totaling $68.62, and to a failure to appear charge. Burns gave notice of appeal after he was sentenced to 90 days in jail for the offenses. Bond on all four charges was set at $1,000. Daisy Beatty, Rt. I. Box 439, Raeford, received a six month suspended sentence after she pleaded guilty to passing a worth less check. She was ordered to pay $154.54 restitution for Larry's Drive-In plus court costs. Clifford Edison , Crowder, Wadesboro. pleaded guilty to DU1. and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended for 12 months, and fined $150 plus costs. He was granted a limited driving privilege for the year his license is to be surrendered. Donald Keith Moore, Rt. 1, Box 1 18, Raeford, was sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended for 12 months, after he pleaded guilty to DU1. His license was suspended for the 12 month period, and he was granted a limited driving privilege. Moore was fined $150 plus costs. Iria Lee Purcell, Rt. 1, Box 126, Raeford, pleaded guilty to DU1 and was sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended, and fined $150 plus costs. Purcell also surrendered his license to the clerk of court for 12-months. He was granted a limited driving privilege. James Daniel McCants, Pine Bluff, was sentenced to 90 days in jail, suspended for 12-months, after he pleaded guilty to DU1. He was granted a limited driving privilege after he surrendered his license to the clerk of court. Ernest Sparks, Marston, sur rendered his license and paid a fine of SI 50 plus costs after he pleaded guilty to DU1 and transporting an open container of alcohol in the passenger area of a car. Sparks also received a 90-day suspended sen tence for the offenses. James Willie Leach, Raeford, pleaded guilty to public intoxica tion and was sentenced to seven days in jail, retroactive to date of arrest. Jessie McCoy, Rt. 1, P.O. Box 339, Raeford, pleaded guilty to public drunkeness and was sen tenced to 15 days in jail, retroactive to time of arrest. McCoy was also charged with resisting arrest. After pleading guilty, he was given a prayer for judgment continued for three years. Tomie Revels, Rt. 4, Box 825, Red springs, pleaded guilty to exceeding a safe speed and was given a prayer for judgment con tinued upon payment of costs. All costs were remitted in excess of initial costs of court. School Office Personnel Holding Annual Conference The North Carolina Association of Educational Office Personnel is holding its 2bth annual conference March 17-19 at the Sheraton Center, Charlotte. The NCAEOP is divided into 14 districts with more than 1.650 members. Ellen Blackwelder. pres ident. Stanlv County Schools. Al bemarle. will open the conference Thursday and the group will be welcomed by John Belk. mayor of Charlotte. Thursday night, the "first con ventioners" will be welcomed to the conference and treated to a fashion show . Also, the candidates for state officers will be introduced. On Friday, the North Carolina Office of State Personnel Training Division will present a workshop titled THAT SOMETHING EX I KA". Also, Tom Norris, State Board of Education, will conduct a workshop on "Finance". At the awards banquet on Friday night the HOP. Boss of the Year, and Scholarship winners will be an nounced. The first Professional Standards Certificates will be awarded to 65 members who have completed the required course. Newly-elected state officers and district presidents will be installed. Rt. 4, Box 342, Raeford, pleaded guilty to speeding 68 in a 55 MPH zone and was fined $10 plus court costs. Kinley also pleaded guilty to speed ing 60 in a 45 MPH zone and was given a prayer for judgment con tinued and fined court costs. Frank Raley. Jr.. Pageland, S.C., pleaded guilty to speeding 75 in a 55 MPH zone and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, suspended, and fined S25 plus costs. Rudolph Whitehead. Fayette ville, was ordered to pay costs after he pleaded guilty to driving left of center. Rebecca Long Hester, 608 S. Main St.. Raeford, pleaded guilty to a passing violation and was fined S10 plus court costs. John Locklear, Rt. 3, Maxton, was sentenced to 30 days in jail, suspended, and fined $25 plus costs after he pleaded guilty to driving without a license. Larry Virgil, Rt. 2, Box 497, Raeford. pleaded guilty to driving with an expired license plate and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, suspended, and fined costs of action. Velma Lowery Carter. Rt. 1. Box 73 A, Shannon, pleaded guilty to driving left of center, and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, suspended, and ordered to pay court costs.
