Area Incidents Man Jailed In Weapon Assault A county man was arrested Sunday and jailed on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill in connection with the beating of George Hollingsworth of Rt. 1, Raeford. Hollingsworth was struck in the head by a blunt object about noon on June 8 and taken to Moore Memorial Hospital where he un derwent surgery, according to j * i nJl - . ^ * ? m deputies. James A. Maynor. 43, ot Rt. 4, Red Springs, was picked up Sunday and jailed in lieu of $5,000 bond to await a June 24 appear ance. Two men were jailed on charges of breaking and entering and larceny following a break-in at the residence of Benjamin Kemp in the Jones Hill section on June 8. Stewart St.. has discovered smut in his garden. However, in this case he did not uncover a cache of girlie magazines, hut rather a destructive disease caused by parasitic fungi. Home make their home in Stedman. and Horace McLean (alias Pee Wee), 20, no address listed, were jailed in lieu of $1, 000 bonds each. A June 24 appearance was set. Kemp reported that a television, radio and other items worth $215 were stolen from his home. Deputies arrested Billy McCain, 30, or Rt. 4, Raeford, and charged him in connection with two break ins at Locklear's 76 Station on U.S. 401 -business. Lonnie Locklear re ported that the station was entered June 5 and a quantity of wine was taken and another break-in occur red June 12, deputies said. McCain was jailed under S5.000 bond to await a June 24 appear ance. Preston Ross, Fayetteville, noti fied deputies that a break-in had occurred June 1 at the New Hope Temple on Bethel Rd. Music equipment valued at SI, 680 was taken by the intruders, according to deputies. No arrests have been made. William C. Hales, Rt. 4, Box 14S, Raeford, reported that $6 in pennies and $400 worth of bad checks were missing from his grocery. Deputies on patrol dis covered the door window broken about 3:30 a.m. June 9 and notified Hales. Apparently nothing else was disturbed, according to the report. Butch Posey, Rt. 2, Box 2 vO-A, Raeford, reported that a water pump and tank was stolen some time between June 6 and June 10 from Phillipi Church. The pump was valued at S230 and damage to the pump house was estimated at $125, according to a report filed. In the city, last Friday two teachers reported that a sharp object had been used to scratch the paint on their cars parked at the high school. Damage to a 1974 Chevrolet belonging to Ethel W. Callender of Fayetteville was esti mated at $150. Damage to a vehicle belonging to Carrie L. Hampton of Fayetteville was listed at $50. Raeford Auto Company's mobile office on US 401 -bypass was broken into Friday. Thieves took the keys to a 1977 red, four-wheel drive Ford pickup truck, model F-150. The vehicle has not been recovered yet. No arrests have been made. Billy Black told police Monday that someone had forcibly entered a trailer at 217 Lamont and taken a camper-type Panasonic television and radio valued at $159. The property was recovered and war rants were drawn Tuesday. Police said two or three suspects will be charged in connection with the theft. Bessie L. Blue, 201 Lamont, informed police Saturday that an 18" color television valued at $409 had been taken from her trailer. Harold Teal, 219 Wright St. complained June 9 that a $70 aluminum ladder had been taken off the back of his truck while it was parked in an alley on the west side of town. Ex-Hoke Teacher Appointed Dr. Gerald D. Maynor former Hoke County teacher, has been named Dean of Student Affairs at Pembroke State University, re placing Dr. James B. Chavis, who was named earlier this month as Chief Ombudsman for North Caro lina by Gov. Jim Hunt. Since last August, Dr. Maynor has been serving as Director of Development and Public Affairs for PSU. Prior to that he was Director of Student Teaching, being appointed in that position in January, 1975. Dr. Maynor joined the PSU faculty in 1973 as a professor in the Education Department. A native of Pembroke, the 42 - year - old Maynor earned his B.A. in social studies Jrom Pembroke State University in 1959, his M.A. in guidance and counseling from Appalachian State University in 1966, and his doctorate in educa tion administration from the University of Miami in 1974. While at the University of Miami, he was the recipient of an American Indian Scholarship and also a grant from the National Leadership Training Program. Dr. Maynor is a member of the N.C. Personnel and Guidance Association, the American Per sonnel and Guidance Association and the N.C. Association for Educators. Prior to his joining the faculty of PSU. he was a teacher at Maryland Training School for Boys in Baltimore from 1959 * 63, at Hawkeye High School in Hoke County from 1963 ? 68 and at Hoke County High School in Raeford from 1968 - 71. Dr. Maynor is married to the former Annie Ruth Lowery of Pembroke. Southeast PCA Directors Attending Annual Meeting Officials of the Southeast Pro duction Credit Association and the Federal Land Bank Association of Lumberton are attending the an nual conference for directors and presidents of Federal Land Bank Associations and Production Credit Associations at the Marriott Hotel, Atlanta, Ga., June 15-17, accord ing to Eugene M. Smith, Jr., president of the Production Credit Association, and Edward C. Sum ner, president of the Land Bank Association. The theme of the conference will be "Partners in Progress." Approximately 800 farmer directors, presidents and guests of the 46 Land Bank Associations and 58 Production Credit Associations in Florida, Georgia and the Caro linas are expected to attend. The farmer-owned and operated Southeast PC A serves Robeson, Columbus, Hoke, and Scotland counties Other officials of the FLBA of Lumberton who will attend the conference are Duncan G. Womack Hospital To Close Friday Womack Army Hospital will close at noon on June 17 in order to give pre-camp physicals to approx imately 3,000 Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) cadets. All outpatient clinics, laboratory and X-ray facilities will be closed. The emergency room will remain open for patients with emergencies. The pre-camp physicals will run through June 18. Mike Wood Waller Coley When a backyard barbecue in a Chicago suburb was rained out, the group moved two charcoal braziers into the garage and continued the par ty. Within a half hour, one woman fell unconscious from monoxide gas and could not be readily revived - fifteen of the party were hospitalized.
