SCS Activities By Oval Richie District Conservationist In the North Carolina summer time, people's thoughts naturally turn to the great outdoors. Wide use is made of existing recreation areas, whether a big beach or mountain resort, lakes and ponds, hiking trails, campgrounds and similar facilities. "We also need to be thinking about our future needs in outdoor recreation," said D.R. Huff Jr., chairman of the Hoke Soil and Water Conservation District. "What most people do not know is that they have a valuable aid in planning such facilities here in Hoke County." In fact, such surveys have been made for every county in North Carolina. The district has a published compilation, complete with maps, that tells about the potential for outdoor recreation. It covers every thing from campgrounds to hunt ing, from fishing to horseback ? riding, and includes recreation farms, swimming and boating, and a variety of other ways to "have fun in the outdoors" as the chairman 4 Put it The survey has actually been available several years. "But even though this is not a brand new book, it is still very useful to people who are interested in developing facilities of this type," Huff added. "You can see the survey of the Soil Conservation Service office in Raeford or see a supervisor of the Hoke District," he said. "In addition, the professional workers of the SCS and soil and water conservation district super visors can give you useful infor mation on facilities of this type," he said. He said that with expanding population, and more leisure time, the need for such facilities will continue to grow, both for local people and visitors to North Carolina. "So it has a real potential ?? for fun and profit," the chairman concluded. 'Correction Jimmy Crosland, pictured in the June 9 issue of The Newt-Journal wax incorrectly identified as a member of the Hoke County Liter* acy Council. > Crosland is the manpower co ordinator for literacy in Hoke County and the executive director of the Scotland County Literacy Council. AN EQUAL OPPORTU NITY EMPLOYER. 7C Jobless Rate (Climbs Again Unemployment in Hoke County during April climbed to 8.5 per cent according to the latest report issued by the Employment Security Commission. The April figure reflects a rise over the March estimate of 8.2 per cent jobless. The number of workers without a job during the month was estimat ed at 690 out of a total estimated labor force of 8,120 persons. The number of employed persons was put at 7,430. CITY BUDGET (Continued from Page 1 ) which received $3,000 from the city in the current year, had requested $4,000 this year. It submitted a proposed budget listing expenditures and income for the coming year of $30,000. Councilmen Graham Clark and Bob Gentry voted yes on a motion to grant the $4,000, but the motion Was overridden by councilmen Sam Morris, Craw ford Thomas Jr. and Beany McLeod, who voted no. The dissenting councilmen said they felt the city should get more specific information on what the money will be used for. Some weeks ago, the legality of the city's contribution to the Chamber was cast in doubt after an opinion from the Attorney General's office was received by the city. According to that opinion, the uses of any city tax dollars given to a Chamber of Commerce must be strictly monitored and used for only certain purposes. A public hearing on the city budget will be held June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at city hall. COUNTY BUDGET (Continued from Page 1 ) Inspector Ralph A. Ellis ? S13.350. First. It is being coached by Terry Grier of the local high school and from all reports, are doing very well for the first season. It seems that the pitching is not as strong as it should be, but maybe as the years pass this will also develop and tnis team will once again be competing for the state .title.
