By Willie Feathentone, Jr. Asst. Agr. Ext. Agent To conserve energy and save dollars, wrap your hot water heater with additional insulation. Let's say you have a bb gallor water heater and decide to wrap*} with blanket insulation that has an R factor of 1 1 . This should save you 450 kilowatt hours of electricity a year. And if electricity costs three and-a-half cents per kilowatt hour, your annual savings would be $15.75. If you use a water heater insulating kit. you would probably save 350 kilowatt hours of electrici ty a year or SI 2.25. the R value of blanket insulation that is sold in kit form is normally less than 1 1 , which accounts for the difference in money saved. Here's a reminder. If you have an oil or gas water heater, do not put insulation on the lop or bottom. Placing insulation on the top may interfere with the draft of the heater's flue. Putting insulation on the bottom will cut off air to the flame. Again, if you have an oil or gas water heater, insulate the sides only. In addition, check the heat setting on your hot water heater. If you have an automatic dishwasher, set the thermostat on your water heater at 140 degrees Fahrenheit . If you don't have an automatic dish washer, set your water heater thermostat at 120 degrees. You may also save energy dollars by insulating all your water pipes, especially the hot water ones. Housing 4-H Corner April 15-lb.
