Henhal Smith
Hershal "Smitty" Smith, 58, of
Rt. 4, Raeford, died Sunday.
The funeral was conducted
Tuesday afternoon in Crumpler
Funeral Home by Dr. John Ropp.
Burial was in LaFayette Memorial
Park in Fayetteville.
He was an Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Florence Smith; his sons, Hershal
Smith of the home, and Michael
D. Smith of Wichita Falls, Tex.;
his daughters, Stephanie Peterson
of the home, Mrs. Denise Liv
ingston of Raeford, and Mrs.
Marlaine Carter of Virginia Beach,
Va.; his brother, Alfred Smith of
Casper, Wyo.; his sisters, Mrs.
Bertha McDaniel of Wichita,
Kans. , and Mrs. Florence Stolen of
Rogersville, Mo.; and two grand
children.
AWARD WINNER -- Tammy
Glenn Harrell, a Hoke County
High School student, has been
9 named a 1982 United States Na
tional Award winner in business
education by the U.S. Achievement
Academy. She is the daughter of
Virginia C. Harrell of Raeford and
Thomas Harrell of Nashville, Tenn.
Miss Harrell was nominated for the
award by Mrs. Shirley Parsons, her
business education teacher. Miss
Harrell will appear in the Aca
demy's Official Yearbook publish -

The council also voted to raise
the city vehicle registration fee to $3
from the present SI. Mayor Mc
Neill pointed out that the council
could have raised it to S5. under
authority of state law.
A motion to reimburse the
Baptist Church the building-permit
fee (S400) it has paid the city was
tabled till the July 12 meeting after
McLeod said he wanted time to
study it. Gentry, introducing the
motion, indicated he was respond
ing to a request made by a church
member on grounds that so many
of the members are city taxpayers.
The motion was seconded by
Councilman Vardell Hedgpeth, Jr.
Councilman Graham Clark said
that if the church is reimbursed,
then other churches should be
reimbursed also, in all fairness.
The council decided on the July
12 date for its July meeting because
the regular meeting date. July 5,
falls in the Fourth of July holiday
weekend.
