"^Hsr From the Superintendent's Desk by Raz Autry The Top of the Mountain 1 have been deeply involved in athletics all during my many years in school work; as a player at East Carolina University, head coach, principal, and superintendent. I have heard all of the criticisms that go along with every phase of athletics. Everyone in the stands is a better coach than the one on the field. If you don't believe this, all you need to do is to sit in the stands during a game and listen to the "spectator coaches", including yours truly. As a breed, coaches have visions of grandeur. They can visualize themselves directing a team at a large university or coaching the super bowl champions. I have witnessed coaches who had such visions but I have also worked with those who had visions of making responsible, dedicated, caring men out of boys. Two of the latter kind 1 have worked with; namely, John Pecora and presently Tom Jones. A lot has been written about John Pecora and all of it was good. 1 personally paid him the ultimate compliment when I said that I couldn't possibly think of a man that I would rather my son than John Pecora. Tom Jones is cut from the same mold. He is honest, dedicated, and places the welfare of his players above everything else. His coaching methods have proven effective. Coach Jones is going through some trying times now because he is a winner. Winning hasn't come easy to Hoke High the last few years. In time Coach Jones will produce a winning team. It will be a team made up of fine, dedicated, young men who know what is necessary to become winners. The public and school officials will have to be patient. We have experienced entirely too many changes in our coaching staff. Some of our former coaches, in my personal opinion, have exploited our youngsters on the younger teams because they wanted to win at any cost. That attitude, plus the fact that we have not had very many gifted athletes the past few years, is the reason for our lack of victories. We have played many fine outstanding young men but the athlete who would stand above the crowd, the one with the special gift of leadership just hasn't been available. Even if a team doesn't have the above qualities, they can still win if they have been exposed to a coach who has given them a sense of stability and personal worth. Tom Jones will supply both of these ingredients. Hoke County High School has changed conferences several times during the last few years and this has not helped. Many of those teams have been, and still are. sitting on top of the mountain because of their athletic program. The miscalculation teams on the mountain make about teams in the valley is that they think the teams in the valley are envying or worship ping them. The truth is that the teams in the valley are working as hard as they can to get to the top of the mountain. Sooner or later all teams must come to the valley. If our fans will be patient Tom Jones will carry us to the top of the mountain and keep us there for a long time. My writing, talking, or cursing won't stop the boys at the coffee shops, etc.. from doing their Monday morning quarterbacking. Haul Clinch Tom Jones This is as much a part of the American athletic scene as it is for a half-back to imagine he scored a touchdown eyerytime he touched the ball. Everyone be of good cheer because we have the coach, the athletes, and the time to get to the top of the mountain. We need to brainwash our supporters like the Carolina grad uates who really believe that stuff about God loving Carolina because the sky is blue. They even believe that when it's raining.
