BASTION OF FAITH - Wall's Chapel United Methodist Church stands in the countryside ofBowmore a bas tion of faith. Free Glaucoma Testing Held Here January 17 The Society to Prevent Blindness is working to fight a tragedy - glaucoma, the sneak thief of sight! The Society will be offering free glaucoma screenings at the Medicine Shoppe pharmacies in Fayetteville, Raeford, Hope Mills, Dunn, Sanford and Raleigh. Individuals may be tested in Raeford on Monday, January 17. Testing will be from 10 a.m. to 12 p:m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. with no appointment necessary. The tragedy of glaucoma is that it usually is not detected until after some sight has been lost - and any vision lost can never be restored. The Society has been working with North Carolina Medicine Shoppes in a campaign geared to the detec tion and education of glaucoma. Two million Americans are vic tims of this disease with half not being aware of it. Symptoms in clude blurred vision, inability to adjust eyes to darkened rooms, seeing colored rings around lights and reduced side vision. Senior citizens are among the high risk groups. Black people have a greater risk of getting glaucoma than whites, and the disease tends to run in families. People who are very near or far sighted run a higher risk as do those with diabetes and other chronic diseases. An eye exam every two years is recommended for persons past the age of 35, but individuals in high risk groups may want to check with their doctor to see if they should be examined more fre quently. Mike Steadman at 864-5330 SALE or LEASE ?STOP CRIME BEFORE IT HAPPENS" ?Licensed *Bonded VISA IAW For Laypersons Missing Persons, Part III When a person is missing for a period of 30 days or more and a diligent inquiry has not located I him, a temporary receiver may be appointed on fairly short notice to take charge of his properly and conserve it until a full hearing can be held. ' However, before a permanent receiver can be appointed to take care of the missing person's pro perty, proper notice must be given to the missing person and anyone who may have an interest in his property. Needless to say, it is difficult to give notice to a missing person, but the North Carolina statute pro vides a method which, under the circumstances, will hopefully be effective. Section 28C-S provides for notice to be given to the missing person by publication once in each of four successive weeks in one or more newspapers in the county where the proceeding is pending. Also, a copy of the notice must be posted in a conspicuous place upon each parcel of land owned by the missing person, and another copy must be sent by registered or certified mail with return receipt requested to the last known ad dress of the missing person. If the judge deems it necessary, he may require that further notice be given to the missing person. When the final hearing takes place, the judge will listen to the evidence available about the miss ing person. Any person who has an interest in the missing person's property may offer evidence to show why a permanent receiver J should not be appointed to hold and control the property. Assuming, however, that the judge does And that the person has in fact disappeared, he will then appoint a permanent receiver of the missing person's property. The temporary receiver, if he is not the same person as the perma nent receiver, will turn over to the permanent receiver all of the pro perty that he has from the missing person's estate. The permanent receiver will then begin to manage the missing per son's estate and, if necessary, pro vide support for his family. "This progress of glaucoma can be stopped but it must be detected," says Doris Hamlin, Program Director for the North Carolina Society to Prevent Blind ness. "Several million people have suffered partial or total blindness because of lack of information regarding this disease." The test for glaucoma is simple, painless and takes only a few minutes. Anyone with an elevated eye pressure will be referred to a vi sion specialist for diagnosis.
