School News Chorus exchange Members of the Turlington School Chorus exchanged performances with a Fayetteville school recently. Shown here are the members of the Hoke school performing Alice in Wonderland. m Turlington Chorus Takes Part In Choral Exchange With Ramsey The J.W. Turlington Chorus of Raeford and the Ramsey Street Elementary Chorus of Fayetteville participated in a choral exchange program. The transportation for both groups was provided by Hardee's through the Division of Arts Education. On May 31. the Ramsey Street Elementary Chorus presented a program of choral sections to the student body of J.W. Turlington School. The Ramsey Street Chorus has 55 members from the fourth and fifth grades. They are under the direction of Miss Beth Wood. Mr. Donald Dixon, principal and several teachers traveled with the group. The Turlington Chorus per formed Alice In Wonderland and several choral sections to the Ramsey Street student body on June 1. The chorus consists of 95 members under the direction of Mrs. Vickey Elliott and accom panied by Mrs. Betty Upchurch. The Turlington Chorus was chaperoned by Miss Emma Minis, principal; Mrs. Mary Archie McNeill, Fine Arts Coordinator; Mrs. Betty Upchurch and Miss Hope Williams, teachers; and Mrs. Irma Hedgepeth, a parent. Amy Wilson Honored The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Amy Wilson of Raeford has been named a 1983 United States Na tional Award winner in history and government . This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Academy recognizes less than lO^o of all American high school students. Amy, who attends Hoke High was nominated for this National Award by Sarah F. McCallum, History teacher at the school. This honor will appear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally. The Academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recom mendation of teachers, coaches, counselors or other school spon sors and upon the Standards of Selection set forth by the Academy. The criteria for selec tion are a student's academic per formance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, depen dability, and recommendation from a teacher or director. Amy is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Ferguson. Her grandparent is Lois Austin of Raeford. Three Raeford Students Named To UNC Dean's List Three students from Raeford made the spring 1983 dean's list at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. To make the dean's list, a student must earn a 3.2 grade average on the 4.0 scale while taking 15 or more letter grade hours of credit, or a 3.5 average while taking at least 12 letter grade hours (with no grade below a C). The students are: Robert Kevin Davis of N. Jackson St., Donald Steven Matthews and Mary Cath erine Sappenfield of 309 Old Farm Rd. Davis Takes Part In Navy Exercises Navy Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Edgar J. Davis, son of Betty J. and Hubert S. Davis Sr. of Route I, Raeford, recently par ticipated in exercise "National Week" in the Mediterranean Sea. He is a crewmember aboard the guided missile frigate USS Clifton Sprague, homeported in Mayport, Fla. National Week was an eight-day U.S. Sixth Fleet exercise involving approximately 20 ships and more than 200 carrier and land-based U.S. Navy aircraft. I The exercise tested naval war fare responses to a multi-threat air, surface ship and submarine en vironment. Pamela Sharer Docker y Dockery Receives Medical Degree Pamela Sharee Dockery of P.O. Box 123. Raeford. received the doctor of medicine degree (M.D.) from the School of Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill during commencement exercises here May 15. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mack L. Dockery of Raeford. Dockery will begin postgraduate training in Pediatrics at Charlotte Memorial Hospital beginning July 1. She attended Hoke County High School and completed her pre medical studies at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At the UNC-CH School of Medi cine she has been active in the Whitehead Medical Society. Stu dent National Medical Association. Christian Medical Society and was the recipient of Board of Gov ernor's Medical Scholarship. Gloria McRae Receives Certificate Gloria D. McRae, a 1975 graduate of Hoke County High School completed her study of theological education at Liv ingstone College in Salisbury. She received her certificate on May 10 from Hood Theological Seminary. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James W. McRae of Raeford, N.C. McRae Honored At NCA&T State Larry C. McRae, a graduate of the 1978 class of Hoke County High graduated from North Carolina A&T State University on May 8. He was also commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Air Force. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. McRae of Robeson Avenue, Raeford. Shui Tsai Graduates From UNC At Charlotte Hoke County resident Shui Mien Tsai, 621 Niven Street, Raeford, is among more than 1800 University of North Carolina at Charlotte students earning graduate and undergraduate degrees during commencement ex ercises at the Charlotte Coliseum May 14. Dr. James H. Wcrntz, Jr., vice chancellor for academic affairs, presented the candidates for degrees, and Chancellor E.K. Fretwell Jr. conferred the degrees. Shui graduated with a B.A. in business administration. Bundy Named To Wingate Dean's List James Michael Bundy of Rt. 2, Raeford has been named to the Dean's List at Wingate College for the spring semester of 1983. Students must have carried 12 or more hours of academic work, have had no grade below a C, and have made at least a 3.3 grade point average (g.p.a.) to qualify for the Dean's List. A 4.0 g.p.a. is a perfect mark. Dees Takes Part In Navy Exercise Navy Machinist's Mate Third Class Melvin L. Dees Jr., son of Rachel W. and Melvin L. Dees Sr. of Route 2, Raeford, recently par ticipated in "Comptuex 2-83," a training exercise conducted in the Virginia Capes Operating Area, off the East Coast of the United States. He is a crewmember aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Dewey homeported in Charleston, SC. The exercise was designed to in crease crew proficiency of par ticipating ships, submarine and aircraft in coordinated fleet opera tions. Training was conducted in anti air, anti-submarine and anti surface warfare. Several "war at sea" and surface action group operations took place in which simulated battles were conducted between opposing sides, each com posed of surface, air and sub marine forces. Part of the exercise included surface-to air live missile firings against remote-controlled drone targets, along with surface-to air and surface-to surface gunnery training. Additional training focused on seamanship, navigation, replenish ment at sea, and mine countermeasures. The Dewey is 513 feet long and carries a crew of 377. A recent survey showed 71 per cent of food shoppers checked newspaper ads before shopping in 1982, compared with 61 percent in < 1977.
