Senior Citizens Have Ballot Power It's important for older citizens to clearly demonstrate 'senior power' on election day by exercis ing their right to vote. Many programs and benefits to make life better for elderly have been gained through the legislative process, and this progress will either be maintained or lost through the political system. All of the existing programs for older Americans are the result of legislation. The Social Security Act was proposed by a president, and passed by a Congress elected by the people. Since most older people live on fixed and reduced incomes they have a stake in pending actions on all levels of government, as well as the legislative records of the can didates running for office. Medicare, Medicaid, job pro grams for the elderly, food stamps, meals and nutrition programs, and senior centers all are a result of legislation proposed by elected representatives. And you can add to this list tax incentives and reduc tions, laws to protect the elderly against crime, and a law that legal ly ensures grandparents will be allowed to visit their grand children. In spite of this progress, statistics from the state Board of Elections show that senior citizens over the age of 68 generally have a lower voting record than any other group except those aged 18-23. There are now 950,000 people in North Carolina over the age of 60. If these senior citizens all voted for a single issue of candidate they could have a dramatic impact on the outcome of an election. The voting process begins with registration. A person can register to vote through the local Board of Elections or at a public library. Any elections registrar or judge also can register a citizen. If a disabled person calls the county Board of Elections, arrangements can be made for him or her to register at home. Registration must be completed 21 days before elec tion. Once citizens legally are registered they can either go to the polls on election day or mail in an absentee ballot. To vote absentee, a voter must obtain a ballot from the county Board of Elections. Then the ballot must be marked and signed in the presence of a county official or notary public. The completed ballot must be returned 30 days before a municipal election and 60 days before a statewide election. A physically disabled person can vote at the curbside of the polling place, and assistance is available to anyone who needs it in order to vote. I strongly encourage senior citizens to register and to vote because that's the best way to make 'senior power' work for them. Sunday School Lesson Background Scripture: Esther. Devotional Reading: Psalms 31:19-24. "I'm a survivor" has become an increasingly universal creed. It is based on a conviction that, no matter what may come upon us, the most important thing is for us to find some way to survive the ex perience. It may mean compromis ing one's principles, submitting to humiliation, and even par ticipating in some form of evil or debasing activity - so long as it enables us to survive. Eyed in the cold light of reason and morality, it must be evident to us that, although being a "sur vivor" is greatly to be desired, it is something that should not be bought at the price of our own damnation. The problem is that when we are confronted by this choice - between surviving and maintaining our integrity - reason and morality are often clouded by our instinct towards self preservation. The story of Esther - or Hadassah - is a shining example for all of us who are tempted to choose survivorship over disciple ship. Esther, as Queen to the powerful King Ahasuerus of Per sia, must have assumed that she at least would be safe from the anti semitic plots of Haman. She was shocked when she learned of his terrible plots against the Jews, yet she realized that there was nothing she could do, for it was forbidden for even a queen to attempt to in terfere in the rule of her husband. Mordecai, her adopted father WHEEL ALIGNMENT NEW TIRES and RECAPPING McDONALDS TIRE RECAP. SERVICE PHONE 875-2079 114 RACKET ALLEY ft STEWART STREET and leader of the Jewish exiles, sent a message which startled her from her complacency. "Think not that in the king's palace you will escape any more than all the other Jews." The king's palace, although it had seemed safe and secure to Esther, was no place to hide. For, even if she should escape physical harm from Haman, she would not escape the deep stain of guilt for having failed to speak for her people. "For if you keep silence at such a time as this," warned Mordecai's messen gers, "relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another quarter, but you and your father's house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?" Mordecai's words were able to penetrate Esther's survivorship defences. She knew that she had to at least try to save her people. She also realized that she needed help beyond herself and so she asked for spiritual support: "hold a fast on my behalf..,! and my maids will also fast as you do." At last she saw things clearly and she made the response that guaranteed that she would be more than a survivor:.../ will go to the king, though it is against the law; and if I perish, I perish. Only thus did she become a sur vivor in the truest sense of the term. McGINNIS Plumbing and Supply Bathroom Remodeling 875-8861 Lie.
