Third Place: Candy Bars: Is More Less? — Henry Oxendine, Tabitha Hunt and Robert Campbell. # South Hoke Elementary celebrated Black History Month with a variety of activities. Dr. and Mrs. Milton Will iams began last month with a presen tation about being proud of who you are. Each day a student read over the intercom a salute to an African Ameri can for their accomplishments and effects on the world, past and present. The Hoke County High School Gos pel Choir performed a melody of songs for the school body. Each class deco rated their bulletin board/door with a famous black American. Commis sioner James Leach gave a talk during the “1 am” program. A student from each class represented a famous black American and gave a speed about their person. The month ended with a young, gifted and black program. Two Hoke High students, Javon and Jamont Beatty, along with Kemoya Hilton from E.E. Smith High School, gave an inspirational talk to the student body. South Hoke students were also chosen for their talents and presented to the student body. The Child Nutrition staff also cel ebrated the month by visiting class rooms and talking about foods origi nated from the black culture. The staff made peanut butter and served it with crackers and juice to the classes.# In celebration of Dental Health Month, Mrs. Vinnie Baker, dental hygienist, visited each class during the week of Feb. 17-19. She spoke on the importance of having and keeping healthy teeth. Mrs. Baker demon strated the proper way to maintain your teeth. After her speech on healthy eating, the nutrition staff provided healthy snacks to each class. Videos were also shown about sealants and their significance in keeping teeth healthy. The children received prizes for their participation. A competition was held ono the best decorated bul letin board/door and a popcorn party was given to the winners (Mrs. Johnson’s K and Ms. Sampson’s multi-age, tied for first; Mrs. Szwaja’s first and Mrs. Hiter’s fifth).# Mrs. Evington sponsored the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital math-a-thon. The students solicited sponsors. After completing problems, the students collected the money, to taling $932 for the hospital. Good job South Hoke students.# The South Hoke Student Govern ment/Junior Historians sponsored a humanities t-shirt sale. Approximately $500 was collected. Last year the group adopted a wild horse from the t Wild Horse Corral of North Carolina. 'They received an adoption certificate and a picture of their adoptee. They also donated money to the Save Qur Lighthouses of North Carolina. (All names ^pear as sub mitted by the school.)# East Hoke Middle’s Career Explo ration Club visited Open Arms Rest Home on Feb. 13 to deliver gift bags and Valentine’s cards. The students wanted to do something special for the residents. They selected the project, “The Gift of Love,” after one student visisted a relative in a rest home. They prepared 67 gift bags and made over 100 cards for the residents. The students raised money for the project by publishing a school news paper. Career Club members also made donations. After the visit to Open Arms, they discussed other ways to help at the rest home. They also talked about how good it made them feel to share their gift of love. On Feb. 25, the Career Club par ticipated in the Career Exploration Clubs of N.C.’s regional competition in Pinehurst at Sandhills Community College. Monica Dial and Stacy Maynor won third place for career research and public speaking. # East Hoke Middle celebrated its annual Black History Assembly on Feb. 21. The guest speaker was Dr. Sharon W. Cooper, a graduate of Fisk Uni versity and Meharry Medical Col lege. She completed a 21-year career in the Army and presently is the chief officer of development and forensic pediatrics in Fayetteville. Her speech was on “No matter who you are, be the very best you can be.” In the program students also per formed, including: poems, step teams, eighth grade band and chorus, and the Gospel Choir from Hoke High. EHMS parents also .performed,, along with the Friends of EH MS, staff and a student from FSU. The entire program was very posi tive and informative. # Winners for the Upchurch Elemen tary Science Fair were: K- 2: Kathryn Brigman, first; Emily Connell, second; Anna Poole, third; Joseph Finley, honorable mention. Third grade: Megan Ellis, first; Emma Willis, second; Alex Connell, third; Justin Larson, honorable men tion. Fourth grade: Teri-Lynne Hart, first; Timothy Walters, second; Greg Brigman, third; Justin Smith, honor able mention. Fifth grade: Whitney and Ashley Phillips, first; Mosheh Samson, sec ond; Amber Oxendine, third; Melissa Maxwell, honorable mention.# Rockfish Hoke Elementary held its science fair on Feb. 26 and 27. There were 16 projects from our school. Winners who participated in the county science fair were: Rebecca Lowsky, Kristin Franklin/Tanya Hoaglia, Brandon Brantley, Renee Turner, Evan Lowsky, Derrick Mor gan, Joshua Strauch, Jamie Malphrus, Andre Henriquez, Austin Walker, Lindsay Odom, Emily Makanani, Matthew Jacobs, Susan Shepley, John Lyle and Yancey Leigh Carter. Winners from the county competi tion will go to the regionals at UNC- Pembrokeon March 26: ReneeTurner, Joshua Strauch, Jamie Malphrus, Andre Henriquez, Emily Makanani and Yancey Leigh Carter.# The Rockfish Hoke PTA will sell cookies for $1 a pack for its cookie sale. The money raised will go to purchase PTA supplies, teacher wishlist items and playground equip ment. Please show your support. RH third and fourth graders held a Black History/President’s Day pro gram for parents on Feb. 28. Two children from each class represented famous American figures, including Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Oprah Winfrey, Thurgood Marshall, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and George Wash ington Carver. The chi Idren portrayed events of these famous persons’ lives. Ms. Lebo’s and Ms. Caulder’s third graders recited poetry. The program concluded with all the children sing ing “Give a Little Love.” March 17 is spring picture day at Rockfish Hoke.
