Socials School Some assembly required First grade students in Brandi Small’s class at Don Steed Elementary School grew part of their lunch in an AERO garden, pro vided by a grant obtained by Melissa Thomas, a student’s parent. Students grew lettuce and monitored its progress, and then each brought a salad bar item to add to the lettuce.The project integrated math, science and nutrition education. Out of 16 events, the students earned 11 ratings of superior and five ratings of excellent. Figuring in multi-numbered ensembles,a total of 14 superior medals were earned by the East Hoke students. DeniseWallace, director of bands at EHMS, prepared the students and accom panied each event on the piano. Honors band Three East Hoke Middle School students traveled to UNC-Pembroketo participate with the UNC-P Honors Band March 27.The students were selected by Pembroke officials from lists submitted by area band directors. Chosen to sit with the band were Jazmyne Davis,bass clarinet,Carlos Ramirez,clarinet and Zakyree Wallace, clarinet. The students are taught by EHMS band director Denise Wallace. The students spent the day in rehearsals with guest conductors, preparing music they had never seen before, and performed in a public concert. End-of-grade prep Upchurch Elementary School got some help for end-of-grade test preparation from Charles Fipps (center) of Charles K.
