Call 875-4035 or come by the Parks and Recreation Department Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. The last day to register is April 30. thru May 4 Lumber River Regional SENIOR GAMES begin in April. This local event promotes total health and physical fit ness for all seniors ages 55 and above. Seniors will be competing in bowling, horseshoes, shuffleboard, table tennis, putt-putt golf, golf, arts and crafts, poems, short stories, comedy/drama, line dance and singing. Hoke County seniors compete against Robeson and Bladen county seniors. If you are interested in participating or for information contact Pat Graham at 875-4035. thru June SUMMER CAMP APPLICATION and REGISTRATION — Camp Program will begin this June for children ages 6-11 years old. A maximum of fifty (50) camp ers will be enrolled; so we invite parents/guardians to register their children now. We also seek applicants (ages 18 and older) to join our camp staff. April - June The HOKE COUNTY COALITION AGAINST HOME LESSNESS meets the second Monday of each month at the Hoke County Public Library at 10 a.m. April 29 - May 13 Liberty Homecare and Hospice is offering GRIEF SUP PORT GROUPS from 12-2 p.m. in the living room of Open Arms Retirement Center, 612 Health Dr. This group is free and open to anyone dealing with issues of loss and grief. May 1 A HOKE COUNTY GOP MEETING will be held at Ann’s Coffee Shop (formerly Cactus Creek Coffee House), Hwy 401, at 9 a.m. The NC Turkey Festival will host the 3RD ANNUAL “SPRING FLING’’ from 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. at the Ra eford Civic Center. Cost is $5.00 per person. Music and karaoke will be provided by DJ David Kitchens. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will also be served. May 2 MILL PRONG HOUSE, 3062 Edinburgh Rd., Red Springs, Open House will be held from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. and the first Sunday of each month. Also other times by appointment. Mill Prong House is one of the few re maining Highland Scot settlements in North Carolina. Built c. 1795 in the Federal style by John Gilchrist, the house was renovated by its new owner. Col. Archibald McEachem, in the 1830s in the Greek Revival style. With no change to the fabric of the stmcture, restora tion of the Mill Prong House was completed in 1993 and included air conditioning, heat and electricity. Mill Prong House offers a unique look into the past. May 7 Liberty Hospice is having a MOTHER’S DAY MEMORI AL EVENT at the Raeford-Hoke Museum, 111 South Highland Street, at 5 p.m. This outdoor service will be to honor the memory of mothers who are no longer with us. This event is free and open to the public. We are hoping to compile a “Memory Cookbook” so send us one of your mother’s recipes. Mail recipes and RSVP by May 3 to Myeshia Regan, 336 S. Main St., or call 875-8198. Light refreshments will be served. A BREASTFEEDING SUPPORT GROUP MEETING will be held at the Hoke County Health Center from 1 p.m. - 2 p.m. The topic will be Infant Bonding & Child Discipline. The speaker will be Brenda Currie, Parent Educator with Parents as Teachers Program. The public is invited. There will be door prizes and refreshments. May 8 A RABIES CLINIC will be held in the Paraclete Wind Tunnel Parking Lot, just off 401, near Hoke/Cumberland Line, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Cost will be $6.00 PER ANI MAL (DOGS & CATS ONLY). The owners of all dogs and cats three (3) months of age or older shall have the dogs or cats vaccinated against ra bies with an approved vaccine administer by a licensed veterinarian. The veterinarian shall issue the owner of the animal a vaccination certificate, and such owner shall retain such certificate until the vaccination is re newed. At the time of the vaccination, a metal tag shall be issued by the veterinarian showing the information required by G.S. 130A-190. May 8 & May 20 FAMILIES ALL READ (F. A.R.) programs — May 8, 2 p.m.: Who Loves Me?; May 20, 6:30 p.m.: Let’s Go To The Beach! Children ages 0-5 will receive a free book when accompanied by a parent. F. A.R. is a Smart Start funded program and is designed to encourage parents and children to “go F.A.R.” with reading together and is held at the Hoke County Public Library. From 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. there will be three ultrasound screenings held at SECU, 1108 Fayetteville Rd.: Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA), Stroke Screening/Carotid Artery (CAD), Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) 1 screening for $30, 2 screen ings for $60 and all 3 screenings for $85 (by appt. only). May 15 HOKE COUNTY RELAY FOR LIFE is having their 4th ANNUAL KIDS WALK at RAZ AUTRY STADIUM from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. To register each child needs to complete a registration form, pay a $10 registration fee, and try to set a donation goal of $25 or more. A parent or legal guardian must sign the registration form. Reg istration deadline is April 15. (Please be aware that we will honor all registrations up to the event, but we can not guarantee T-shirts for registrations turned in after the deadline.) June 30 Photo Deadline COMING FOR THE CENTENNIAL — A photo book of Hoke County from the Raeford-Hoke Museum. Do you have any good quality Hoke County pictures that you would like for the museum committee to consider for the book? If you have a picture or pictures, let the museum committee know at (910) 875-2875. If you have any pictures of local churches, old or new - very old would be better - you may bring them in. Pictures of places, things, or people in Hoke County would be great. The committee will consider all pictures. You may bring the pictures to the museum on Monday or Tuesday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Work on the book has begun so bring any pic tures in as soon as you can, so we can write captions for them. Opening ceremonies are Friday, May 14 at 6 p.m., kicking off with parachutists fromRaefordParachute Center. The Survivor Lap, being one of our most memorable moments with each survivor walking a lap and taking a stand against cancer, will start at 6:25. Without Relay for Life and the money raised to find a cure for cancer, these survivors may not have ever been able to take this lap. The evening will be jam-packed with local talent from all over Hoke County includingUnityChoir, Greg Inman, Mike Orem, and many, many more. We will be having a womanless beauty pageant Friday night with some of our men dressing up for the cause. They then will be going around and filling their pocketbooks with dollars to determine who’s Mrs. Relay. At 10p.m., you can startregister- ing for our famous 3-on-3 basketball tournament that lasts way into the night. We will have a bungi swing, train rides, a relay jail, bounce houses and lots of food and fun for aU.
