C. State Fair catalog which reminds me that many community and county fairs will be held dur ing the next six weeks, Every gardener should take an interest in the local fair and also the State fair. If you have any thing worth exhibiting you should take pride in showing it. How many times have you stood in front of a prize winning flower, vegetable or fruit at a fair am' said, either to those with you or to yourself. “I've got a better one than that home in the garden right now.” And you may be abso lutely right. Only, having it win a blue ribbon on the show table and -having it growing in the garden are two entirely different things. The point is to get it from the garden to the show table and still have it good enough to win over the oither entries. Before >ou enter an exhibit, read over carefully the instruc tions in the catalog. Be sure to enter the exhibit in the proper class, and have it properly label ed. If the class calls for a plate of 12 specimens be sure that you have twelve—*no more and no less. i > In vegetable exhibits, specimens ' should he of best marketable size except where the catalog calls for | the “largest’’ as in the case of | pumpkin. Where the class calls for ' a plate, tray, peck or bushel, the individual specimens, should be as | nearly alike in size, shape and | color as possible and should have the true characteristics of that particular variety. Potatoes need not be washed unless it will im ; prove their appearance. However. | if not washed they should be | brushed with a soft brush or cloth. ! Flower exhibits call for perfee ! tion. Good stems, good healthy 1 foliage, and a perfect bloom are | essential. It is important to have ! flowers in good condition at the ; time of judging. A rose bloom I should be from one-half to three fourths open—a tight bud will I not be cons;, ereri bv the judges. Fruits, such as apples and pears, j should have true varietal charact ! i risties, should be well colored I and not over-ripe.. They should j hi free from disease and insect damage. Stems must not be re I moved from apples and pears. | All specimens in a plate or tray should be uniform in size, shape, j and color. I STATE COLLEGE ; ANSWERS Question; Is there anything I (an do to prevent prolapse in my chickens? Other chickens pick at birds in this condition, killing them. Answer: No. Birds suffering i from prolapse seldom make a re covery. If the prolapsed bird is located before the other chickens destroy it, the flesh is entirely safe for table use. The condition arises when the oviduct becomes loose and protrudes from the vent oi the bird. It is not a disease but a physical condition. Some people think a high corn diet may be related to prolapse. You might as well expevt the appearance of prolapse on a small scale in your flock. Question: Is there any way I can conveniently figure out when is the best time to market my steers? Answer: Yes. The price you re ceive for beef cattle varies with the grade and the month when sold. Each grade has a seasonal price pattern. Price changes and patterns are influenced by the supply and kind of cattle market ed each month and by seasonal changes in consumer demand for different cuts of meat. Seasonal price changes for different grades in North Carolina are very close to those at Chicago, except for the “prime” grade. A new publi cation, “Seasonal Variations in Beef Prices,” Extension Folder No. 110, can help you ma-ket your cattle at the right time. You can get a free copy from your county | agent or by writing to “Division j of Agricultural Information, N. C.
