Farmers Hear Mr. Cone on District Soil Advantages Five educational meetings, with an attendance of about 73 fai'mers, were held last week by A. A. Cone, assistant state con servationist, and the county agent, at which organization proceeding was explained and what benefits k would be for the landowners if 1 jates county becomes a part of the - Roanoke-Chowan Soil Con servation District which includes Hertford, Bertie and Northamp ton counties. Mr. Cone expl ined clearly the benefits and services made avail able to farmers, without cost, in cluding technical assistance, mak ing drainage surveys for both tile and open ditches, crop rota tion, soil improvement, soil test ing, woodland management prac tices including reforestation, thinning and harvesting timber and forest fire control. Tree and kudzu seedlings, if available, may be granted to the farmers in the Roanoke - Chowan district, in cluding mechanical equipment for doing soil conservation work. ft Landowners Vote on Project Ballots, along with an explana tory letter will be mailed out the week of January 15 to each landowner who may mark his ballot, sign and drop it back in the mail or return to the county agent’s office. All landowners are urged to participate in the voting, it being their right through statue to reg ister their preference. A small vote by farmers will very likely cause the State Conservation Committee to deny Gates county becoming a part of the Roanoke Chowan district. ^ Two Pay Fines W. T. Satterfield of Newport News paid a five-dbllar fine for speeding, and Walter L. Briggs of Gatesville was fined ten dol lars and costs of court for driv ing without a permit and speed ing, in two cases before Judge A. E: S. Ellenor in Gates county recorder’s court last Tuesday. mrs. blair has Operation Mrs. Charles B. Blair, teacher in the Gatesville High School, un derwent an appendectomy at Lakeview Hospital, Suffolk, Mon day afternoon. IN FRANCE. — Cpl. Edison Hobbs, son of Mr. Mrs. G. A. Kcbbs of Hobbsville is now in Southern France, according to his parents Cpl. Hobbs finished his training at Camp Chafee, Ark. Has Operation Robert Morris, young son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Morris of Eason Cross Roads, underwent an operation for appendicitis in Nor folk General Hospital last Tues day. He is recuperating satisfac torily, according to latest reports. Open House On 60th Anniversary Of Wedding Day Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Carter of Gatesville will celebrate their sixtieth wedding anniversary with open house on Christmas , Eve, Sunday, December 24, from ^*5 until 6 o’clock. 1 Their relatives and friends are all invited to call between those hours, but are asked to omit bringing gifts. Both natives and life-long re sidents of Gates county, Mr. and Mrs. Carter are 84 and 78 years of age respectively. Sunbury Airman In Raid on Tokyo Ralph E. Phelps of' Sunbury was a member of the crew of a B-29 which bombed Tokyo over the weekend, according to an Associated Press dispatch from the 21st Bomber Command on Saipan Island in the Pacific. The Superfort, the dispatch reported, went in about 5,000 feet lower than normal and set off large fires. Caught in search light beams for four minutes, the Superfort received a small hole in one wing tip from flak. Index to Close The office of the Gates County will be closed from Wednesday afternoon through Tuesday, Jan uary 2, in observance of the Christmas holidays. Gates T§s 6th War Loan Goal The Si^th War Loan drive officially ended Saturday, and on Monday Robin Hood, chairman of the Gates County Wai Finance Committee, announced that Gates county had p'one over the top, both in sales of Series “E” Bonds and the other bonds. , - ■ Against its quota of $127,000, the sales reported Monday to the i Federal Reserve amounted to $128,086.25, Hood said in offer ing his deep thanks to those who helped in making the drive a success. Series “E” Bonds sold amount ed $77,493.75; the quota was $76,000. Hood reminded that all >onds bought before December 29 will count against the Sixth War Loan quota. A surge of buying late in the campaign boosted Gates over the top. Chesapeake Camp Corpora tion of Franklin, Va., which owns a considerable amount of pro perty in Gates county, recently sent Hood a check for $25,000 with instructions to invest it in Bonds and assign the credit to Gates county. The check was in compliance with a request made by Hood on behalf of the home demonstration clubs of the coun ty which sponsored the drive. Each participating club was given a per-member share of the Chesapeake purchase to enter in the inter-club contest whose re sults have not yet been announ ced. Page 5 Mills Lawrence Home Burned The old Mills Lawrence home stead, unoccupied at the time, was destroyed by fire Saturday after noon. Owned by Douglas Freeman of Gates, the two-story frame dwelling was one of the oldest homes in the county. Cause of the fire is more'or less a mystery, since the latest tenant had recently moved away and no one was living in the house. LOAN Harrell Services Held; Hearse In Winton Collision Funeral services were held a.': Cool Spring Baptist Church Sun day afternoon for William Mill.:; Harrell, 75, who died Friday, after an illness of two month.-. Burial was in the church ceme tery. Flans for the funeral were up set in Winton when the hears?* was involved in a collision cn route to Gates from Franklin with an automobile driven by a Colerain man. The hearse and casket as well as the automobile were heavily damaged, and i . was necessary to bring another hearse and casket from the funeral home in Franklin before the funeral procession could again get under way. Mr. Harrell is survived by five daughters, Mrs. L. S. Carter o" Gatesville, Mrs. C. P. Sonner borne of Alexandria, Va., Mrs Don Younce. of Norfolk, Mrs A B. Jernigan of Portsmouth, and Mrs. T. J. Parker of Winton; four sons, T. J. Harrell of Suffolk, L. T. Harrell of Gates, D. M. Har rell of Wilson, and G. W. Har rell of Newport News. Church Program Children of the Gatesville Methodist Church and children from other churches of Gates v^lle will present a Christmas program at the Methodist Church Sunday night at 7:30.
