Churches Assigned Quotas to Raise For Chowan College Ahoskie. — Plans for the re opening of Chowan College as a co-educational junior college in the fall of 1947 are going for ward rapidly since the initial meeting in Murfreesboro two weeks ago. At a meeting of the pastors of the West Chowan Association held in Ahoskie Baptist Church Monday morning, the churches in the association were appor tioned certain amounts to raise during the campaign to get the $150,000 needed to re-open the college. Murfreesboro and Merherrin churches were apportioned $50, 000 and the other 57 churches in the association $60,000, leaving $40,000 for churches in the Chowan Association to raise. Since the college is to be at Mur freesboro, the Mu rfreesboro churches were assigned the larg est amount to raise. A meeting of the trustees and the pastors in the West Chowan and Chowan Associations was to be held in the Baptist church in Edenton Tuesday night. This meeting was to inform the pas tors of the Chowan Association of the plans of the trustees and pastors of the West Chowan As sociation and to solicit their aid and cooperation in re-opsning the college. The Rev. Lonnie Sasser of Murfreesboro who has been ask ed to be executive director of the campaign to re-open the college, was expected to accept the posi tion Tuesday night. He will re sign his present pastorate to devote his full time to the col lege. “Interest in the college is growing all the time,” reports the Rev. Oscar Creech, chair man of the publicity committee. ChowanCollege closed its doors at the end of the session in June 1943. The Chowan and West Chowan associations both voted last year to re-open the college, but no definite plans were made until two weeks ago. The res ponsibility of reopening the col lege was placed on the pastors at the West Chowan Association meeting this fall. “Me...I’m staying in the Army! ★ THERE ARE PLENTY OF REASONS . • . AND HERE THEY ARE!” 1 “First, I keep my present grade. * That means a lot. 2 “By reenlisting for 3 years I can pick my own branch of service in the Air, Ground or Service Forces, and can go to any overseas theater I wish. 3 “I get my mustering-out pay, even though I’m reenlisting. Also, I get $50 a year reenlistment bonus for each year I’ve been in the Army. My dependents receive family allowances for the full term of my enlistment. And I’ll be eligible for GI Bill of Rights bene fits when I get out of the Army. 4 “My food, clothes, quarters, medical and dental care are all supplied to me. And I can learn any of 200 skills or trades in the Army schools. 5 “All of us who are reenlisting are going to have from 30 to 90 days’ furlough at home with full pay and our travel paid both ways. And we’ll have 30 days’ fur lough every year with pay. 6 “Any time after 20 years I can retire at half pay increas ing year by year to three-quarters retirement pay after 30 years of service. And the time I’ve already served in active military or naval service counts toward my retire ment time. Added up—reenlist ment seems pretty sound to me!” JANUARY 31,1946 AN IMPORTANT DATE FOR MEN IN THE ARMY MEN now in Army who reenlist before February 1 will be reen licted in present grade. Men hon orably discharged can reenlist within 20 days after discharge in grade held at time of dis charge, provided they reenlist before February 1, 1946. ^ You may enlist AT ANY TIME for 1 Vi, 2 or 3 year periods. Peanuts Make Bathing Suit A “goober swim suit”, worn by Emmie Hurst of Cordele, Ga., is an odd costume made with $1.25 worth of raw peanuts and five hours of sewing by Miss Hurst, who was recently shown clad in it in the Macon, Ga., Telegraph & News. A two-piece affair, the costume will probably keep Miss Hurst afloat if she ever goes swimming in it. The real point is that “'Crisp County (Georgia) has a bumper crop of peanuts this sea son that will bring the .farmers of that section and other peanut counties more cash than King Cotton.” :<€«etese*et€*e*€<c****f *€«*«*<€* V NOTH\Ng SO endure0 aND practical as iiliil EXQUISITE Furniture GIFTS :-?€«€*€!€"•€!€*€*€«€«€!!€ !£*€*€?€*€*«& MIRRORS Beautiful image-perfect wall mirrors in a riot of shapes and sizes to fit any nook or cranny. iliigjiip—1—TiimiwniifiMiBWTiiinnnirnmiFinirn i ii ■ uni i innm i WALL WHATNOTS SMOKING STANDS i i i i i i P€«*e««*<*e«€*e«e HASSOCKS TABLES SEE OUR WINDOWS AND DISPLAY FLOORS Occasional j CHAIRS \ FLOOR LAMPS 1 Lamps for every pur pose: reading or bridge, to suit every individ ual need.
