DISTRICT PRESIDENT.— E. W. Morgan, principal of Aulander School, was elected president of the Northeastern District of the North Carolina Education Association at the annual meeting held in Green ville November 16. Farmers Find Difference In Dusted Peanuts Winton.—Experiments or. the farms of four Hertford county farmers in dusting peanuts to prevent leaf spot showed an 'aver age increase an acre over un dusted peanuts of 634 pounds. The four farmers are T. D. Chitty of Murfreesboro. J. R. Phelps of Aulander, L. C. Dilday and L. S. Jernigan of Ahoskie. In the experiment yields were taken from an acre of dusted peanuts and an 'acre of undusted peanuts. The results on each of the four farms were as follows: i T. D. Chitty. 2.348 pounds an acre from dusted peanuts, 1.503 pounds an acre from undusted, difference of 845 pounds; L. C. Dilday, 2,142 pounds from dust ed, 1,491 pounds from undusted, difference of 651 pounds; L. S. Jernigan, 1,824 pounds from dust ed, 1,399 pounds from undusted, difference of 425 pounds; J. R. Phelps, 1,562 pounds from dusted, 948 pounds from undusted, dif ference of 614 pounds. The cost of dusting is about $3 per acre which makes approxi mately $60 an acre profit, accord ing to J. W. Ballentine, county agent. Inexperienced? Then Don’t Farm Are you a discharged service man who is considering buying a farm? If you are, read the ad vice from Dr. John R. Hutche son, president of Virginia Tech, who is also a farm owner and operator in Halifax county. Dr. Hutcheson says if you are an experienced farmer and if you can pay cash for the farm, then you may be justified in taking up farming. But if you have never, farmed before and if you cannot j pay cash for the farm, then Dr. Hutcheson advises that you do pot start farming now. Land prices are very high at the present time; in fact, they have gone up fifty percent in the past four years. This is a good time to sell a farm, but not a good time to buy. Even if you lived on a farm before the war, helping your father or some member of your family, don’t plan to go back to the farm unless you are needed there. Farming is a highly specialized field that requires lots of knowl edge and skill. Some say it is one of the hardest professions that exists. Coupled with these drawbacks, competition is keen and land prices are high. Take the advice of Dr. Hutcheson and don’t start farming unless you are sure you can make a go of it.
