' v All the Year Bound. - ' Navigation on Lake Michigan is nev er clo.'d. Steamers run back and forth across the lake and between the porta of the west shore of the lake during the entire winter with remarkable regular ity. The first attempts at winter navi gation on the translake routes were made by tbe Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad company and by the now de funct Kngelmann Transportation com pany many years ago, and the fiocess of winter ventures became established as the character of tbe steamers was improved and developments were made Jn marine enginery,. Now winter navi gation proceeds almost uninterruptedly, and the new car ferries steam back and forth with little regard for weather or for ice. The success of the car ferries on Lake Michigan and the car ferry which defies winter in the Straits of Mackinac is probably the cause of the announcement that negotiations are in progress looking to the construction of ice breaking freight steamers that will enable their owners to "keep them in commission on tbe Lake Superior and lower lake route during tbe winter, Tne report is without foundation, There is a vast difference between the navigation of Lake Michigan from ono shore to the other, and along its west shore, and ,tho navigation of the great lakes throughout their lengths and through theinterlake channels. Ice breaking is expensive, and occasionally (be ice floes defy the crashing powers of the best of tbe so called ice breakers. One of the car ferries was recently stall ed by a floe near Menominee which de fied net only the steamer, bnt the ex plosive power of dynamite. The trouble of winter navigation on the chain of lakes would occur in theinterlake chan nels and in tbe canals. Owing to the clogging effects of the ice, it would be almost impossible to epeiate canals dur ing midwinter.. Another and a very serious bar to general lake navigation in winter is tbe prevalence of snowstorms, during which nothing whatever can be seen. Snow is more obstructive to the sight than fog, and during a driving snow storm it is impossible to see anything ahead, even in tbo daytime. Winter naviga tors on Lako Michigan, who are never out of sight of land for any great length of time, experience their chief annoy ance from snowstorms. ' They manage to steam into port when snow is flying . because of their familiarity with me rouin, nun mey occueionauy gei in to (rouble'while they are wrapped in "the tumultuous privacy of the storm. " ' It does not follow, by any means, that because winter navigation is suc cessful on Lake Michigan it can be made eureesefnl iu tbe upper and lower lake, servite. If a young 'man would contemplate an ideal Cf nseful living, we commend to him tho addrecs delivered by Carl tehurz at tbo funeral of William Stein- way, tbe head of tbe great house of piano manufacturers. After referring to tbo fact that the dead man began bii active life as a simple workman and in his success remained tbe ideal knight of labor Mr. Schurz said: ' i "Ho was a pattern as a tich man. I wish I could call tbe millionaires of the laud to this bier and say to them, 'Those among yon who lament that at times poverty loqks with mutteriugs on ricbes learn from this dead man. . "His millions were never begrudged him. The dark glanoe of envy never fell upon biro. Covctousness itself passed him, by disarmed and reconciled. But he knew one luxury, and he practiced it; tbat was tbo luxury of the liberal band a princely luxury tbat few . of tbe world s greatest have in' dulgcd iu more richly than he. ' "It was not money alone tbat be gave. It was the heart joy of tbe genu: ine benefactor, with which he bade tbe worthy welcome cud often anticipated their wants.
