Im meno Work, of Art and Skill Carried Out by These Balera. It would be polite fiction to assert that everybody who looks upon the great monuments of antiquity the pyramids or the Coliseum, for example thinks of the cost and wonders where the money came frfttn. Bnt when, by chance, a learned person suggests the inquiry only an idiot fails to be struck for a moment It is so curious that while modern states, with all the ac cumulated wealth of the antique world at their back, and the treasures of Mexi co, California, Australia, the Transvaal in addition, have to consider ways and means with anxious care before build ing a government office, the early mon archs ruised palaces and temples by the hundred at will. The thoughtless have a ready explanation slave labor did it all. But, in the first place, the slaves bad to be procured somehow by war or purohase and either meaus was expen sive. There is a reply to that objection equally facile the war paid its own cost in loot But this only leads us a step backward. The loot must have been enormous, and where did it come from? In the second place, those slaves had to be fed, and, however cheap their ra tions, tho sum total must have been im menso when such vast numbers were employed. But captives of war could only do rough work. Thcj might bnild the Col iseum or the pyramids, direoted by nu army of skilled craftsmen. But the sculpture of Assyrian palaces, the paint ing of Egyptian temples and tombs, must have been effected by artists, probably free, or, if slaves, trained at great ex pense. When we rend that tho city of Dur Sarguun was created on an empty plain, by order of the king, in eight years, standing on a monnd of brick 700 acres in area, its walls 60 feet higbhroad enough for seven chariots to run abreast, i und faced with stone, all the evidence is needed to make us credit the story, but tho marvel becomes far greater when we observe the miles of sculptured stone that decorated Sargon's palace with colossal bulls on each side of every doorway. No unpracticed band carved those reliefs. They are the work of art ists. Were all the sculptors of tho cm-' piro summoned to this tusk, to be flu ished in eight years? But the tombs of private individuals in Egypt must have been painted, ut the cost of the family, by masters of the craft. Animals and birds show a skill not to be surpassed. Wo may be quite sure that work like this was highly paid by comparison, tliat is, with slave labor. So the question recurs, How much joki and silver did theso ancients pos sess? In the l'oniun time men appear to have been struck with tho evidence of vast wealth displayed by their predeces sors, such as the Cussais could not equal. But they escaped the difficulty with enso by granting them riches literally beyoud tho dreams of avarice. Dr. Ar buthsot, for example, has patiently reckoned up the amount of treasure heaped upon the pile of Sardanapalus by Athena-'us, and be finds that it came to 10,t)53, 120,000 in our money at tho least, for if a computation which Atlie Vivxe himself suggests be admitted tho total would be about twice as largo. After this the statement of Diodorus that the Pharaohs counted npon a reve nue of 133,000,000 annually from gold mines in the Bishari desert nnd drew an equal snni by taxation is very mod erate. But when the same most valua ble writer who talked nonsense only when he repeated the words of other men comes to deal with Babylon be lets himself go. There was a gold statue of Zeus (the Greek assigned his own gods to Babylon as usual) 40 feet high; of Bhea equally tall, with a lion of gold at each knee and silver serpents to correspond; Juno weighed 500 talents; in front of her was a golden tablo, 600 talents, upon which stood two cups, 800 taleuts each, and three bowls, 1,200, (500 and 600 talents. These orna ments of o single tomple represented about 11,000,000, and tho building was covered with gold plates. It has been calculated that the statue of Nebuchadnezzar mentioned in Daniel would be worth 3,600,000; that the treasure left by David amounted to 150,000,000 in gold, 200,000,000 in silver, bnt the value of the Hebrew tal ent is doubtful. We are told that Pyth eus, seemingly private gentloman of Phrygia, entertained Xerxes and all his army, "with most sumptuous feasts," too and then had 4,770,000 left, or, as some compute, 3,600,' iO. The tale of Alexander's loot is most wonderfal of ill, end that is historic. If we enter tain doubts, it is futile to express them when the statements are so clear and the means of disproving them absent In the Persian camp, then, and at Baby ion Alexander secured something like 70,000,000; at Persepolis, 18 000,. 000; at PaMgnrda, a trifle of 9,000,- 000; at Ecbataua, 270,000,000 say 560,000,000. And Darius canted off I 9,000,000, which his murderers seized. i Loudon Standard. Btorles of the Gallant Frenchman and Els Seoond VUlt to Amorlcn. Many charming stories have been told by old ladies who were in their prime when Lafayette made his second visit to America of the gallant Frenchman's courtesy. On the day of his publio reception in Virginia he rode in an open carriage without his hat, exposed to the rays of a brilliant sun, bowing to the crowds always ready to greet him. There was some apprehension that sunstroke might be the penalty of his politeness, but the marquis was an old soldier. Before leaving home he had put a damp towel into his capacious wig and, protected by his helmet, he could indulge his French politeness . with impunity. Frenoh and American revolutions aud Austrian dungeons had taught him the art of self preservation. The most charming Btory is of earlier date his visit to the mother of Wash ington. He found her in the garden, raking together dried weeds and sticks, preparatory to a bonfire, arrayed in a linsey skirt, sack and brood brimmed hat tied over the plaited border of her sap. The hostess met the situation with the composure of a duchess. Dropping her rake, she took between her bare palms the hand the nobleman extended as ho bowed before her and said: "Ah, niarquis You have come to see an old woman I I cau make you wol come without changing my dress. I am glad to see you. I have often heard my son George speak of you. Butcomo in. Preceding him into her living room, she placed herself opposite him, erect as a girl of 18, never touching the tall, straight back of her chair, while she listened to the praises of her son poured forth by the eloquent Frenchman. It is the one disease that physicians can not cure; their mercurial aud potash remedies only bottle up the poison in the system, to surely break forth iu a more virulent form, resulting in a total wreck of the system. Mr. Prank B. Martin, a prominent jeweler at 926 Peusylvania Ave., Wash ington, u.c, says: I was for a long time under treat ment of two of the best physi cians of this city, for a severe case of blood poison, but my condition grew worse all the while, not withstanding the fact that they charged me three hundred dollars. My mouth was filled with eatiug sores; my tongue was almost eaten away, so that lor three months I was unable to taste auy solid food. My hair was coming out rapidly, and I was in a horrible fix. I bad tried various treatments, and was nearly dis couraged, when a friend recommended S.S.S. After T had taken four bottles, I began to get better, aud when I had finished eighteen bottles, I was cured sound and well, my skin was without a blemish, and I have had no return of the disease. S.S.S.saved me from a lite of misery." S.S.S. (guaranteed purely vegetable) will cure any case of blood poison. Books on thedisease and its treat ment, mailed free by Swift Specific Co., Atlanta, Go.
