Special to Journal. Indunanolib, Ind., March 18. Ex- President Benjamin HarrUon breathed his last at 5.50 o'clock this afternoon at his home In this city. The end came peacefully at last, after a hard and pain ful struggle with death. For hours the General lay in a coma tose state. He recognized no one and seemed free from pain. The end came quietly as the physicians had anticipated. He grew weaker and weaker and the heart beats gradually became more faint and the breathing more feeble. Then the heart ceased to beat, breathing ceased and the Ex-President passed away as peacefully as a child sinks into slum ber. General Harrison was in perfect health last Wednesday and was not suf fering from illness of any sort. He was In full possession of the vitality and vigor which has characterized these later years of his life to a remarkable extent. He returned from his afternoon walk without even feeling fatigue and in the evening went to one of the neighbor's to make a short call Thursday morning heawakened with a pain In luq chest, which at nrst was hardly noticeable, but later gradually grew worse, until Mrs. Harrison became alarmed, and the family physician was summoned. He pronounced it simply a cold and at the time feared no alarming results. Then the lungs became rapidly affected and the illness was complicated with intercostal neuralgia'. S iturday his condition was serious, but not such as to caUBe particular alarm. Sunday, for the first time, tti phvbician began to have fears for the recovery of the patient. Biuce Monday morning his condition has gradually grown worse. llHrrUoii's Llf, Benjamin Hirrl.ion, twenly-thlrd President of the United .States, came of a historic line. Major General Harrison, as English ancestor, bore arms with Oliver Crom well and rose with lilm to prominence In the Revolution. It fell to his lot to sign the death warrant of Charles I. and after the Restoration he paid I he penalty for this act, being eiocuted on October 13. lflfll). The first descendant of Cromwell's Geueral who appears In American bin lory was Benjamin Harrison, a member of the Virginia House of Burgesies, later a Delegate to the Colonial Congress a signer of the Declaration of Independ ence, lb roo times Governor of Virginia and a member of the convention that ralltttd the Constitution. His son was Gen. William Henry Harrison, whose honorable career as a soldier and statesman culminated In his election to the Presidency In 1840, to be followed by his death in the While House one month after his Inaugura tion. John Soon Harrison, a son of William Henry Harrison, was the father of Benjamin Harrison, and was a native of Indiana. He was twloe In Congress as a Democrat. The Senate to day confirmed tho following nomina tions of Directors of the Slate Normal and Industrial College at Greensboro: J. Connor, B. F. Aycock, R. T. Gray, and C. H. Mebane. NO DECISION YET. Supreme Court nay not Pass oa Insular Cases Until Fall. Washington, D. C, March 12. The Supreme Court has disappointed tbe law ers by not announcing a decision In the Insular cases, and It Is now believed that the Court may not decide tbese cases until the fall. On the other hand, however, It Is known that It has been endeavoring to reach a decision before for the session, and the fact that mny other cases have beon decided recently taken by many lawyers to indicate that the Court Is preparing to decide the cases this spring. The general belief continues to be that all the cases will be decided in one, and thai a majority of Ibe Court will hold n favor of tbe Administration without deciding broadly and directly that "tbe Constl ullori d es not follow the Bag". Minority oplnioos are expecled on the other side. Tbe expectation of me nhers of tbe Admlnl jtralioo and of most of the Sen ators and Representatives who bars been following the mailer is that the decision of the majority of the Court III ciutlno all thai has been done with respect to the 1 tilllpplnee and Porto Rico, includla the treatment of the Philippines and Porto Rico as lerrltor lea outside tbe Union. Dr. McNeill Sick Most j of Legislative Session. Rull- way Charters. Invest i gatinn of Fires. IJaleioh, March 13. W. C. Newland, acting chairman of the penitentiary board, arrived here today to turn over that Institution tomorrow to Senator Travis, the designated chairmau.of the new directorate. Capt. Newland said to your correspondent: "Our board has been so fortunate in management that tho penitentiary has made money at leant $20,0(10 last year. Of course we put a lot of this iu improvements. The penitentiary will not call on the State for a dollar this year, or next year. We have practically abandoned the Anson farm, for which we have paid $2600 rent a year. We are responsible for Ibis year's rent. The lease has yet some more of life. Next year half the rent will be taken off. We will keep 10 con victs there and cultivate 10 J acres, enough to pay expenses. We will oper ate Ibe Tillery farm this year and next year, when the lease ends Then we di vide crops with the owner. Wu gave up the Northampton farm Djc. "1. Long ago we abandoned the Lyrias lit c farm, and the Castle II ay no farm Neither of these paid, n r has the Anson farm paid. We have for nearly two years Morked no convicts in the phosphate mines. The Caledonia faim belongs to the State. There the great woik will be done. We are handicapped by the dim- intlon of convlcu, when we took charge there was 1200. now there are only 800; the counties taking them. We need at least 1300 cjnvlcts to do all our work and it all convicts for terms over two years were sent to us it would be no trouble to make us self-support Ing. If the counties would senlenre misdemean or men to the roads as well as the felony men under two years and give us the others It would be all ilgbt. We have found railway to be by far the best pay ing. We had last year, part of the lime, a00 conrlcts on thai sort of work. Nov. there are about 100." Dr. McNeill, member of tho Houfe from Brunswick, lias boen very sick ever since a fortnight after the Legislative session began. He had pneumonia In both lungs, plurlsy and throat trouble He will be taken to Maxlsn in a few days. One thing that has greatly wor rled him Is the change In the system of government of his county which the Legislature has made. The Legislature has Ibis week char tered three more railways, the Kant Car olina, Raleigh and Cape Fear, and Dor bam and Raleigh (electric ) It has rr voked the charter of Soulhporl, Wll mlngloa and Western.
