one, and on account of beneficial rains
which have wet the soil thoroughly ser
eral times, a general Improvement In the
condition- of crops took place. The
rainfall wit abundant throughout the
central-eastern section, occurring chiefly
from the lith to 18th, and the only re
tioa of the State still suffering from
drought Includes a few extreme western
counties, TiK Jackson, Swain, .Clay,
Henderson, Buncombe and.. Madison.

numerous severe local storms, especially
la Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, aad a few

from the attack of four negroes.
The negroes were angry because
Clements forced them out of the white
coach into the Jim Crow car. The fight
occurred on the passenger trein which
had left Henderson.
Mitchell the wounded porter was
brought to Raleigh. Three negroes In
cluding Joe Cole are In Jail at Hender
son. The body of Stevens wss also
taken t cullender ton.
Great excitement existed foretime
snd it was feared that the men would be
lynched bat It grew quieter.
Before the shooting Capt. Clements
had ordered the men Into the colored
car and had passed tn there himself and
was collecting fares. He wss followed
by the negroes who, it Is said, were
brothers; they declared they would
teach the conductor a lesson. Joe Cole
struck at Capt. Clements when tho col
ored porter Intervened and "the two
clinched. Cole shot Mitchell in the ab
domen. At this road master Stevens
rushed into -the csr and. attempted to
grepple with the negro Cole when the
latter sent a bullet crashing through
Stevens' forehead.
