Matt hews, came up from Durham yesterday and gave the bond of 5,000 for his ap pearance at the next term of criminal court to be held for this country. It is not probable that the appeal in the case will be heard by the Supreme court un til the October terra and the bond will be renewed from time to time until the appeal is disposed of. It will be re called that Dr. Matthews was con victed of second degree murder and sentenced to twenty years in the penitentiary. At first it was thought beat by Dr. Matthews' people that he should remain in the county jail where he could, with the treatment of the county physician and by means of confinement be unable to get the drug-, be broken of his habit of taking morphine. Oa account of his health, however, they decided that it would be best now to give the bond Bend him to some sanitcrium, and bo will be iromsdia'ely sent to Moufi! The United States Circuit Court, Judge Goff presiding for the tral of Congress man Blackburn will open tou.orrow. Internal Revenue Collector Yer kes, Collectors Duncan and Hookins ar rived. Special Assistant District At torney J. J. Rritt, who will aid in the prosecution arrived early in the morn ing from Asheville, and Disti ict At torney Holton reached here from Win ston at noon. It is highly -probable that first Assistant Attorney General Robb, will reach here from Washing ton during the day. A new attorney appearing fur the defense is Capt. S F Lovell, of Itoone. He arrived Satur day night. Congressman Blackburn in a native of Watauga county ami Capt. Lovell, who is one of tho ablest law yer and best citizens of that section, is here to defend Watauga' "n. Capt Lovell, was the democratic candidate for congress from that District against Llnney, the last time the District was represented by a republican before Blackburn s lintl election to congress. Rumors to the effect that cx-Congrew-man Thomas Settle, who has been here two week or more, waa retained to ap pear for Blackburn were not verified today hcn on of the attorney for Blackburn said that hi attorrn-ys were ex-Judge W P Uynum. Raleigh, N. C, April 17. The mir. ager of the Summer School for teach ers announce that Miss Celista Parrisb, who is professor of pedagogy and di rector of the practice school f.t the Georgia State Normal College at Ath ens, will attend the great meeting of the Assembly in June. The demand for commercial fertiliz ers continue quite heavy and so ?oes that upon the agricultural department lor tax tags. Much cotton continues to be held in this section and the farmers do not seem to show much disposition to t-rn loose, though the figures arc high. A powerful steam shovel is cutting away embankments so as to give a large increase of trackage in the yards of the Seaboard Air Lino Railway here. One of the sections removed was marked by a battery of four fins, which was part of the circle of en trenchments built in 1863 to j rott-ct Raleigh in an attack by Federal troops who, it was expected would make a dash upon tha capitf.l from New Hern where General Foster was in command. Large numbers of slave wors- r.- q jis-i-u v ed to do this work. Tbi r : vc even batteries along thy entrenched line, of these only three remain, the others havii, been removed either in railway or agricultural work. The two rr. giiines h-ive also hern destroyed. One of the remaining batteries i3 near i he soldiwrs home, and certainly ouht to l.e retained ;iS an object of interoxt in future years. It may not be known generally, but it is said to be a fact that at one time it was a plan of Gen eral Joseph VI. Johnson in his retreat before General Sherman to make a stand here at Raleigh, State Treasurer l.acy was looked for last Saturday but will not reach lit re before the end of this week. I c left Arizona yesterday. A letter from Mr. Stephen B. Weeks who is now in rlijrgu of an Indian school in Arizona Hays he met Treasurer Lacy there recently. Mr. Weeks has until the last year or so been at Santa Fe, New Mexico. Unless the authorities of th- A 4 1 1 cultural and Mechanical C:llege make a thorough investigation ;n to the behavior of some of the cadets at the ball game with Trinity yesterday, Gov ernor Glenn will himself start an ex amination of the affair. A toll dog belong to a cadet seized aTnnily chick en and some cadets and I heir town fricndu seized the fowl. In an attempt to save the bird, made by Trinity peo ple, the chicken was killed, and then the cadets repeatedly threw the lod of the fov.l into the air, pulled out the feathers and put these in their hat. One cadet us, J oaths near carriage full of ladies, whereupon another cadet attacked him and there was a heavy fight in which others were drawn, loiter the light was renewed in rear of the grandstand. Comment 00 ti e affair was very hharp and the ladies are very plain in their state menu bk to the behavior.
