But In' this case,, -while did not act officially, as president of the United States, it was nevertheless only because I was . president that wus enabled to act at all, and 1 felt that the money must be considered as having been given me In trust for the United States. . I therefore used It as a nucleus for a foundation to forward the cause of Industrial peace, as being well within the general purpose of your commit tee. for on our complex industrial civl llzation of today the peace of right eoiiHness and justice, tbe only kind of peace worth having, is at least as nec essary lu the industrial world as It is among nations. - t There ia at least as much need to curb the cruel greed and arrogance of part of the world of capital, to curb tbe cruel greed and violence of part of the world of labor, as to check a -cruel and unhealthy militarism in interna tional relationships. ! Paace Generally Good. We must ever bear lu mind that the great end iu view s righteousness, justice as between man andman, na tlon and nation, the. chance to lead our lives on a souewbst higher level, with s brosder spirit of brotherly good will one for another. Peace is generally good In Itself, but It Is never the highest good Unless It comes as the handmaid of righteous ness, and it becomes a very evil thing if It serves merely as a mask for cow ardice and sloth or as an instrument to further tbe ends of despotism or anarchy. We despise and abhor the bully, the brawler, the oppressor, whether In pri vate or public life. -But we' despise uo less tbe coward and the voluptu ary. No roan is worth calling man who will not fight rather than submit to Infamy or see those, that are dear to him suffer wrong. . i ' . With a great bole in bar starboard bow, received in collision off Cape Cod with-the oil tank er Ligonier, tbe freighter Santurce ar nved at. Province town, Mass.. at dawn today and -was beached with decks a wash. After the crash Captain Folk er, of the Santurce, put Seventeen of his crew aboard the Ligoniea, and with fall steam on drove through the dense fog for the shore. All through the night the mep f ed tbe boilers, and with pumps at full bead fought seas which poured through the breach into the ship's side, fearing every moment that tbe bulk- beads might collapse and tbe vessel go to the bottom. The Ligonier is owned by the J. M. Guffey Petroleum Company, of Boston. She reached Beverly, Mass., this after noon. .. - There waa another triumph for wire less telegraph following the night's smash. The Santurce Arrived in Boston three days ago from San Juan, Porto Rico, and left late night for New York. Be cause of the heavy fog, Captain Folk er laid his .course well outside of Cape Cod. Shortly before midnight the lookout sighted another steamship near the big freighter and gave the alarm, but be fore either captain could change bis courae the Vessels were in collision, the other striking the Santuice almost amidship. There, was scurrying on both craft and they hove to in the fog. The strangers reportei through a megaphone that she was the oil tank steamer Ligonier. Captain Catea, bound with a cargo of crude petroleum from Port Author, Texas, to Beverly, Mass.. Her captain said his bows were crush ed, but that all damage was above the water line. Captain Fotker had had his collision bulkheads cl wed at the first impact and this saved the Santurce. NEW BERN, N.C.
