Scuppernong. i The Tokay Vineyard near Fayette- j ville planted about twenty-five years i ago by the late Henry L. My rover, more lor a pastime than for prolu has been extended every year, until, under the proprietorship of Col. Wharton J. Green, it has assumed huge proportions, as one of the great industries of the State. CoL Green, gentleman not only of fine culture and attainments, but of much bnsiness talent and energy, has now a wine trade which even his great wine cel lars can scarcely supply. His Con cord wine is pronounced by connois eurs to be equal to the Claret; bis scuppernong, Delaware and other wines command a ready sale at home and abroad, while he manufactures, "champagne", that is as good as the large proportion of what is bought in this countiy as "Dry Roderer" or "Green Seal." Before the Scupper nong matures, the early grapes come on; and Col. Green ships thousands of boxes of Delawares, Concords, lonas, fcc, Ac, to New York, Phila delphia nud Baltimore. The table varieties are not grown as the scup pernong, on arbors, bat are trellised, and kept pruned down year after year. - When the scuppernong is ripe all the women, boys and girls--white and black through the surrounding country, who are in need of work, are employed to gather the harvest, and they go over the ground with great cloths which are spread on the ground, and the fruit is carefully picked or beaten off, and conveyed by hundreds of bushels to the vats and presses. yne scuppernong vine, atone, at loKay bears every year, it is estimated, 100 bushels, and there aie many which produce from 25 to 40 bushels.
