The Presbytery convened Thursday
morning at t:S0 o'clock and was called
to order by the moderator.
; Devotional exercises for half an hour.
In tbe abeenoe of the treasurer, n
motion of Bev. lit. Spruat, Elder Leo
Heartt was elected treasurer.
The absentees at tbe last meeting of
the Presbytery were called and excuses
heard.
In answer to the inquiry, ' 'Are there
any new candidates to be examined V
Bev. Mr. Hp runt gave notice of a oandi
date in the Henderson Church, at pres
ent at Davidson College, who desires to
be taken ander the oare of the Presby
tery during the coming vaoation.
Reports of permanent committees
were called for.
Dr. Smith, chairman of executive
committee of education, submitted a
report,' which was received.
A motion to dispense with the rend
ing of the minutes of tbe last stated
meeting and read the minutes of tbe
intermediate meetings was adopted.
The minutes of the meetings at Con-
oord, Henderson and Greensboro were
read aad corrections made.
Rev. Mr. Miller called up tbe caae of
Rev. Mr. Tidbali and asked that a com
mittee be appointed to investigate tbe
correspondence between him and Rev.
Dr. 8mith.
Dr. Smith desired the Presbytery to
appoint a full oommlttee, competent to
make a fair investigation of the whole
matter.
Tbe moderator appointed, as raid
committee, Dr. Jobnsou, Rev. Mr. Mil
ler and Rev. Mr. Darnall minister;
and Elders Lo. lieartt and John M.
Brown.
A long letter from young Mr. Tut-
ball's father, addressed to the Presby
tery; was read. The reading afforded
some merriment, mingled with eiprcs-
sions of reg ret.
Dr. Smith read from the manual the
duties of the executive Committee on
eduoation and expressed his surprise
that Dr. Tidbali should, in the face of
these, so misunderstand the motives of
the committee.
Dr. Johnson aked to be relieved from
the committee.
Dr. Harding was appointed in his
plaoe.
Rsv. Mr. Smith asked that Rev. Mr.
Darnall be excused, on acoount of his
intimacy and close relationship with
Dr. Smith. His desire was to have a
oommlttee entirely unbiased.
Dr. Atkinson's name was suggested.
The Doctor asked to be spared.
Bev. Mr. Smith thought that the com
mittee should be of the older members
af the Presbytery , who had no connao
tion with the matter heretofore. The
moderator then appointed, instead of
the committee first appointed, Dr.
Walk Ins, Dr. Harding and Dr. Atkin
son, and Elders Lewis and Lea.

Rev. Mr. Darnall made a statement in
regard to publications and moved that
the Treasurer be instructed to hold in
his hands of any moneys for publlca

was laid over.
Rev. Dr. Smith moved the appoint
ment of a committee on the death of
Rev. Dr. Wiley and other brethren
who have died since the last meeting of
the Presbyteey. The motion was adopted
and Dr. Johnston, and Dr. Smith were
appointed.
On motion, the reoordsof tbe Sunday
School Convention be examined by the
Presbytery. Adopted and referred to
committee on Sessional Records.
Rev. Mr. Darnall renewed his resolu
tion instructing tbe Treasurer to rwtain
$40.00 for ool portage, and after some
discussion it was adopted.
Dr. Atkinson, Rev. Mr. Darnall and
Elder Tate asked to be excused after
Friday evening's Bession. Granted,
Rev. Mr. Baramerell aeked also to bo
exaused after Friday evening' session.
Rev. Mr. Thorn moved that the grant
ing of thesa early applications to be ex
cused bo stopped. The motion was
adopted .
The question. State of Reli'on, was
taken up and narratives from the
oiurches were read showing a genera)
healthy condition, spiritually, and much
work being done in the Sabbath Schools.
The reading of these narratives was
listened to with much interest by the
Presbytery, as by these tbey learn the
State of Religion in the churches.
Pending the reading of these the Pres
bytery took a recess to 3:80 o'clock.

rator. Rev. J. J. Hint's of Wilmington Pres
bytery was introduced and Invited to
sit as a corresponding member.
The reading of narratives on the State
of Religion was continued until com
pleted.

reported. The report was received and
approved.
It was ordsred that the auditing com

sioners could fix the amount, but would
like to know if they could say that no
subscription could be made.
Mr. Simmons explained ton clause as
be understood it and thought there was
sufficient protection to the people of the
townships in regard to voting subscrip
