The fire engines turned out without the alarm being given and prytnted any spread from the sparks. Our citirens who breakfasted at the Gregory hotel at Goldsboro on their way tO the Fair speak in praiseworthy terms Of the way in which they were served there by the proprietors, Messrs. We gladly note that the management of the State Fair concluded to hold over Saturday, making it eve instead of four days as ie usual. On Tuesday , the opening day, it rained a great deal and made it so disagreeable that but few were in attendance and the pro gram of opening was postponed till the next day. This was done ty I resident L'pchurch in a few well chosen words of welcome to the crowd and tendering them free aictos to the grounds. The Moral display ih beautiful One of the heft exhibits there, and one that is of great importance to North Carolina, is the great variety of woods and minerals. They are a end it to the fair. A line display of vehicles can also be seen. AmoDg other exhibits from the East wo notice the patent chair Bwing invented by Geo. Fisher, col., of New Berne, in operation. Ho has also on hand work from his blacksmith shop that attracts attention. There arc other things here wel worthy of mention but our stay was too short to go into details. We have, seen no gaming tables or gambling of any description going on inside the grounds. That speaks well. On ac count of bad weather makiug a heavy track, no racing took place Tuesday, Wednesday nor Thursday. This caused much disappointment. It is hoped that better weather prevailed Friday and Saturday. The marshals bavo been quite efficient in their duties and good order was main tained. A sad accident (the first fatal one since the organization of the Fair) occurred Wednesday afternoon. A man by the name of Berry Taylor from Snow Hill, Green county, was standing between tho tracks of the N. C. R. and the K ( jUBt outside the grounds when a train on tach track going in op posite directions went speeding by. ne became confused and Btood too near the half-hour runing between the grounds and the city. It struck him and knocked him under the wheels, four cars passing over him, badly mutilating his body. Though physicians were quickly summoned, the unfortunate lingered but a few hours. Personal. Open the Jail Ihior fur the Min. dii -. EmrGH Jol'H.na h l'arhups it wouli be well enough to mention some facts in regard to the duty of God's minis ters. They are commanded to preach the Word, to be inBtant in i e.ison and out of season, to reprove ind to rebuke, and exhort with all long sulfering, and to visit those who are sick and in prison . etc. We would say in tho outset that we have not got many ministers who are willing to take up those crosses, ea pocially to visit those that are in prison ; tho task is not a very agreeable one, for they generally havo very hard nuts to crack, sucll as drunkards, liars, thieves, robbers, murderers, and violators of the common law to deal with, and some times vermin to contend with and badly kept prisons and imnolilo jailers that are rough and rugged and don't know how to treat a minister with common politeness when he is trying to discharge his bounden duty towara poor I alien humanity. Sometimes the poor way worn preacher leaves his desk or Btudy to go and spend a few moments in prayer with the prisoners, and when lie arrives tho jailer is gone and tho key misplaced. Theminister must go away, can't get in, his time is lost, trouble lost. And the prisoners inside with all their guilt and shame upon them, some of them will soon be led upon the scaf fold to be hanged, theminister still kept out, the doors barred against him and God, and their souls are lost. Who is responsible? the ministert' No, his skirts are clear. Who then is respon sible, the jailer or the sheriff or who'.' Whv the Bin is upon those that Bhut the door in God's ministers' faces and keep them out. And take God s ministers and religion and the Bible out of this country and your prisons will not begin to hold your law-breakers, and this land would soon flow with blood. In conclusion, opsn wide your jail doors and let God's ministers come in and fulfill, the command that God has given them to visit those who are sick and in prison. Visitor. Prciierva Tonr Eyes.
