One of them came off with a right much battered face. Information was received in the city yesterday that Bill .William?, the mur derer of Luke Russell, was thought to haver been seen near Newport, in Car teret county. Steps were at one taken looking to his capture. The matnolh boiler constructed at the hops of Crabtree & Co. was taken to the foot ' Craven Street yesterday to be placed in the steam tug of Mr. W. B. Blade which will be used in the inter est of his saw mill. The big freshet that has accompanied all the streams in the State is subsiding, .but not before considerable damage has 4een done in causing washouts carrying way bridges, etc In some places the water is reported higher than it has been sinoe 1843. This has not been, nor never will be until the people that compoee her population desire it to that extent which w ill unite them into one mighty effort whereby their entire strength will be concentrated in pushing for w ard and accomplishing measures that are good and beet for the benefit of the puhlic. We do not overlook the fact that self interest lies first, as It should, with every individual, but it is often wise policy to assist a brother for a return of like favors. Natural advantages may bo an auxiliary, but in the main it is with the people as to whether anv town or section falls into the line of progress and marches on to prosperity. Kinston Items. Miss (irnnsly of Greene county hai been spending some time in Kinston. Mr. Claud Hill is in town. He ban had a hard spell of sickness during his stay in Raleigh, and has come home for his health. D. R. Jackson and wife have been absent several days occasioned by the death and burial of Mrs Jackson s father, near LaG range German LaRoque, youngest eon of W A. LaRoque, died on Sunday night and wan buried on Monday. Dr. Harper conducted the burial services. Jesse Vause is in the field collecting for the Dome, tic Sewing Machine Co., which was so well represented for a time by Mr. E. L. Miller, who now re sides in New York city. Mr. W. D. Loftio brought in the finest turnips of the Bkaxnu on Monday and sold to Williams & Bowen. The largest one weighed three pounds and thirteen ounces. Lenoir is ahead, just as we expected. Let us have lock boxes as well as our neighbor-towns. New Berne, Goldsboro and other live places. We have a live people and a live postmaster, and we have about what we want when we get to wanting anything sure enough. Kinston should have a night watch man. Let us have only one policeman to look after the drunkards during the day, and one at night to watch the thieves who are making such raids upon some of our merchants. Things were made lively for a while on Saturday afternoon. A large white mule wae loose on Queen street with about twenty feet of rope hanging to him. Several seized the rope, and a colored man finally held on till others came to the rescue. Ned Miller, an old colored man, was buying -some lard of R. L. Wooten at H. R. Jackson s grocery. While Mr. Wooten was putting up the lard, Uncle Ned- slipped a piece of meat into his pocket. Squire Fields and others wit nessed the performance, as well as Mr. Woolen- Be was at once arrested. While the Squire waa writing the war rant, Unole Ned discovered that the shutter to the back window was not olosed. Wifh a single plnnge he went through the window and made his es cape. Ths river is on a big boom, several feet higher than it has been in several yesri before. The water is entirely over the road leading from the town to the iron bridge, and it is feared that much damage will be done. There is no orossing exoept on boats. It has made this nnt Monday a very onii one. Large crowds were coming and going Sunday to eee the high water. It is now level with rarrotti bridge, ana we hope is about to its highest. Sports men are bringing ia the rabbits by the dozen, 1 The high 'water is the general subject of remarkw v.. - ,' 4 ' Parents cannot be too careful In rearding the health of their babies. ('. J. Nelson, once a citiyn of New Berne. He was a member of the Asso ciation, and took an active part in its proceedings. That cultured Clwistian gentleman. Dr. T Whitfield of New Heme, presided over the deliberations of that bodv, while F. W. Hancock, another of your townsmen, was mado the ciinoJian of its funds. This body showed itself an aggressive and progressive organization, fully awake to the importance of education and evangelization. One of the best sermons was delivered by Rev. Mr. Hires. If men would but live up to his high standard of Christian life earth would be Heaven s vesti bule. One of the best speeches was that of Rev. C. A. Woodson.of Beafort. though he was not the best speaker. The body had a fair share of speaking talent, at least as much as it needed. The fair and tbe "present rains" pre vented the attendance from being what was desired and expected. 8peaking of tbe Fair, what seemed to give most pleasure to those from whom your correspondent beard an expression of opinion, was tbe presence of the Davis Cadets and the young ladies of tbe Klnsey school. The drilling and manly bearing of the cadets demonstrate the excellence of tbe work Mr. Davis and his coadjutors are doing. Goldsboro was exceedingly wet in more senses than one. Many men, young and old, were seen in tbe various stages of drunkenness. One tall man, a pious (?) official of a country church, rot some profane whis key, or whiskey that developed some latent profanity in the olerleal brother. He was trying to help a drunker man than himself on board tbe train. The world may become better when we have lees of sach whiskey and fewer of such church members.
