SInoe then General Jones has visited . Mbrehead City and is bound to be more favorably imprease J with that point, and the Qoyernw will doubtless order - the encampment to be held there. Selling Timber. We notice many deeds are being re- - corded in the offioe of the Register of Deeds of thU county for timber. - Our farmers and land owners doubtless : know their business, bnt perhaps they are not aware cf the fact that many of the land owners in the mountains were badly taken in on the sale of their wal nut Umber several rears ago. Sharpers went ahead of the railroads and bought no this timber at nominal price, tak ing deeds for a number of years, and - when it was too late man found that they had virtually Siren away their timber. " ? -: i The scarcity of money is a great temp tation to many to sell their timber, but it is well to look ahead a little. In a few years many of those who are sell ing tbeir timber for a small amount of monoy will find their lands ; denuded and timber scarce The Wrong Kan. We notice in the New Berne Juuk.naL that Maj W. A. Harvey hue been ap pointed one of the committee on fish, oysters and shell-fish for the Fish and Game Fair to be held in New Berne in March next. If this is intended to refer to our old friend, Col. W. A. Harvey, of Aurora, we protect against his being reduced to thu rank of Major, and trust that the JouknaL will be more careful in the future whvn referring to citizens of Beaufort county. We have no rank below that of Colonel Washington Progress hid) Yi in 11 liarvey of thin city is the man, and be is a geuine Major, hav ing held a iohiuj ission as such in the Confederate army We would be very glad however, to ha ve Col. Harvey, of Aurora to co operate with us bill Introduced by Hon. r. M. Sim moutt. Entitled A Bill to I e (oiu Mher, tic Some years past there wrre about silly millions or dollars of hgbl weight silver half and quarter dollars coined The weight of the standard dollar iben, as it is now, was 4 1 i grains; Ihu light weight coin only contains BO gralua to ibe dollar. It rt(uiree nearly five of the quarters now in circulation to weigh as much as a standard dollar At the time it was coined silver was in much greater demand than gold, and the government coined ibis light weigbi coin to prevent it being seul to Europe II is a legal tender only to the eiieul of live dollars. Aooul thirty five millions of Ibis coin is in the hands of iba people and twenty-five millions of it in the treasury. It has been lying therefor fifteen or twenty years doing neither the government or Ibe people buy more good than If 11 om a pile of cobble stone. Mr. Simmons' bill proiioacs to le-coiu iho twenty live millions of dol lars which are in Hie treasury and add sufficient silver to it to bring it up lo standard weight, viz. 4124 grains, thereby placing it in a parity with the standard silver dollar : lo make the half dollar a legal leudsr for all amounts. and the quarters a legal lender for all sums of twenty-five dollars and under, and to issue silver certificates for it, and lo call in and re coin all lhat is In ibe bands of the people. blionld Mr. Simmons succeed in get ling bis bill through Congress, it will add to the money of the country sixty millions o( slainlaid money, it will lake ul of the lieasury a large amount of money which is now useless (and is des ignated by tbo treasurer as unavailable assms) and put Hie sumo in circu lation eiiloT in kind or in the sbapj of ceitili "ate. It would also give circulation of parchment paper cur rency of ibe denominations of 25 and 60 cents us the bill proposes thai cer tificates shall bo issued on it. by the slateiBent of Ibe Treasurer of the Uni ted Slates issued February 1, 1W8, the the amount of standard silver dollars on hand which werw not represented by certificates was less than thirty millions the exact number being 20,68(1815, showing that out of about three hun dred uiillions of standard dollars which haye been carried all are in active circulation eilher in kind or in ihe form of certificates except aboul thirty millions, lit plainly shows that there is a demand for silver, and if received this money would go into circulation and to some extent releive the pressure. it will also give us a single standard of weight for all our silver coin, and by converting a non legal tender money into legal money it but meets out justic e to those who receive it either for wages or otherwise. William H. Oliver. New bern, N.N. Stonewall Items. Mr. Wrightman Lincoln, aged about 71 years, died at his home on the olh net. A telegram from Richmond of the same date as the above says the prison has been sold for 823,000. The Durham Recorder says: W.Duke, j Sons & Co., sold la.t year 81,000,00(1 worth of cigarettes. This shows how one firm can furnish one-fourth of the cigarettes smoked in the United Stales. The indications point to the nomina tion of Capt. A. II. A. The jewelry store of Chapman & Gale, of Norfolk, was robbed of goods estimated at a value of $30,000. A large safe containing many diamonds, watches and various other valuable articles of jewelry was broken into, and the rascals loaded themselves with the rich spoils. No clue to the burglars can be found . The strikes in Pennsylvania are at tended with the usual results. The tel egrams now speak of great suffering among poor miners. We have not learned any thing more of the particulars, bill perhaps the man who writes the Rnake stories was there and will give us the facts just as they were. A prominent gentleman of Fink Hill township who has nev er j niiil any secret society, was dicrussing the matter recently with one of his neighbors with the view of connecting himself with one and announced his preference for the Good Samaritans. I'pon being in formed that this organization was com posed entirely cf colored people hp de clared that be never had much opinion of secret organizations anyway. There was a small mutiny in the Sal vation Army on Monday night. One of the recent converts visited a bar room too frequently where he imbibed enough of the sinews of war to arouse the "old man" that had not entirely left him, and he went home and raided a row with his family. The Lieutenant in command was sent for and went to the scene with an assistant. The assistant was knocked down, and a shot gun was seised by the rebellious trooper as he made for the Lieutenant who retreated in good order. Tuesday morning he was before Mayor Hill whose orders were more effective than those of the Lieutenant. He was sent to jail for fifteen days and adjudged to pay a fine of tea dollars and the cost.
