It has been sug gested, and the suggestion is a good one, that tbe Fair Association have it published in pamphlet form. It is well written aud was veil delivered. It in a good document to circulate. We will be pleased to publish all the premiums awarded, and wi I take it as a favor if the committees who have awarded the same will favor us with a copy of their reports. At 7 p. m. the President, Mr. Qeo. Alien, dealared the Fair closed acd tbe gate were thrown open and tbe work of removing the exhibits began. The ladies have responded nobly in preparing an exhibit that has done credit to our city. The JourraL will ever be ready te aid them in any lauda ble undertaking. We truBt that this is the beginning of a new era for New Berne. Let us resolve to succeed in whatever we undertake; it requires only unity of purpose and concert of action to do this, and if we do it we w ill soon be in tbe front rank of North Carolina towns in prosperity and wealth. The Fair- Well, New Berne Las bad a iair. It was the first exhibit of the kind ever held here, and although gotten up ill short notice and m the face of many discouragements and difficulties, it was a complete success in every particular, financially and otherwise. We were satisfied this would be tbe result nhen once the people became interested enough to make the effort. -All bave done tlieir wotk well and all have reason to he proud of the suc cess we havt attained. Our ripecled Northern visitors were deprived of their visit on account of the severe blizzard whih began there last Monday. One hundred bad made a r rang em cute to leave New Votk Onlondny night, but those who have read the account of the snow storm and freeze-up will under stand at once why thev did not get here. The various committees have worked well, with but little jurriDg considering that we tlarled out with an imperfect organization, without by-laws to define the duties of each. Wo were fortunate in the selection of a President and specially so in ths selection of lh finanoo committee and committee of arrangements. And finally the accommodalious fcivrn by the A. & N. C. R. and the steamer linos aided much in its success. The iruw.s could not have been run belter and the fare was as low as any onu could icason ably ask. With a railroad to Onslow county and to Washington, N. C, New Berne could command as large a crowd and get up as good an exhibit as any town in North Carolina. As soon as tbe bills are settled up acd the treasurer is ready to submit bis re port, a meeting of the subscribers will bo called acd the question ef organizing a pwmanonl Association will be dis ouaaed . We Apologize. Mr. Allen has for 34 years been a fire man, fie tells me something worth publishing. It is that an Amoskeag steamer at New Berne can get up steam acd throw a stream of water more speedily than any engine in the United Htates. I think he said two or three minutes quicker. And Ibis Is owing to the skill and inventive ability of two or three New Berne men. The above is from F. A. Olds in Wil mington Messenger. We hasten to apologize for both Mr. Allen and Col. Olds because the wrath of the Atlantic boy will know no bounds when tbey bear that one of their own members has conferred upon an Amoskeag engine the honors won by their own beantiful Silsby, after undergoing important im provement by their own invective genius. W apologize for Mr. Alien because we know he never said it. We apol ogise for Col' Olds because he saw and heard so much bers at the Fair that he imagined there was something said about the fire department, quick steam ing, etc. Tbe volunteer fire depart ment are dangerous things for a news paper man to fool with unless he is cer tain to bare everything right. Editoe Journal: Please allow a visitor to your recent Fair to express the very great pleasure enjoyed by bim when attending it. There was not one thing to mas the pleasure of th occasion. Everything was in its plaoe and everything was well worth seeing. . There cannot be sow, if there ever was, any doubt whatever as to the re sources of the country around Mew Berne, . And I am very sure that there canb no doubt a to tbe hospitality, kindnw and wholebtartednee of New Bemoan. When I became wearied ia body, wail walking about tnspaotlns: th va. rioos beautiful azbibits, I found a most hearty weiooos in tbe "editorial room" of tb JOCRNaL on th second floor, thsra wa found, beside wsloome, rest acd refresbmenta. . ',- -- ' - Let us hav another Fair next year. Let v bare a combination of the oous ties around Craven; and. It ia -very plain, that thee oouctis could make such a show of fish, gams, oysters, tim ber sad numberless other resources that would open tbe eye of visitor from a distance and prov tbst in dead snd troth, E&ttrn North Carolina is tbs "Erden rjot"of tb United States.
